This is a novella that spins a dark version of the classic fairy tale Cinderella. Pretty cut and dry.
Okay, okay, I may have a slight thing for “retellings”. There is something about taking a classic tale and giving it new life with the addition of dark or surreal qualities that I simply cannot resist. It appeals to that side of me that enjoys supernatural stories while also commanding the attention of my love for fantasy. More often than not, I can’t go wrong with a good retelling. “Good” being the key word here.
This was certainly one twisted ass retelling. If you are looking for dark, look no further. Every single character in this book is an “A” hole. I am serious. I did not like a single one of them.
The classic tale of Cinderella always worked for me because I wanted to see her get her revenge. It was that bitter sweet moment when she made off to the castle with her prince, leaving the evil step monster and siblings behind that I enjoyed. Why? Because they were jerks and she was deserving of a happy life. Not this trollop, if I may. She is no better than the rest, and guess what? Prince Charming.. jokes on us. More like Prince “Harming”. I am not sure which character is crazier.
This ended up being one big nutfest! I was not rooting for anyone by the time it began to wrap up. I think I would have preferred an ending where everyone perished in a house fire, but alas this does not happen. So don’t worry, no spoiler much to my dismay.
The author did manage to add a new level of wickedness to the story. Kudos for that! And the ending was crafty. I did not see it coming, I admit it. I like the direction she is taking the series in. In fact, the ending sort of justifies the horrendous characters. It all starts to make sense.
Being a novella, this was an easy and fun read. I will probably pick up the next in the series to see which direction the author continues with this. My curiosity is piqued. If you are a fan of retellings, I recommend giving this a quick glance to make your own decision. I am sure there is probably a pretty solid audience for this series. Whether I am part of that audience or not will most likely be determined by the next story in the series, Sneaky Snow White (Dark Fairy Tale Queen Series – Book 2). Yeah that title is not very promising, I admit. We will see!
