My Random Pick

Wizard’s First Rule (Sword of Truth #1)
By Terry Goodkind
Publisher: Tor Fantasy
ISBN13: 9780812548051
Pages: 836
Genre: Fantasy

Millions of readers the world over have been held spellbound by this valiant tale vividly told.

Now, enter Terry Goodkind’s world, the world of the Sword of Truth.

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher’s forest sanctuary seeking help … and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword– to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed … or that their time has run out.

This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

I have yet to experience the work of Terry Goodkind, but I have received nothing but encouragement to change that fact. From what I was able to locate, I believe there are 11 books in this series. That number compared with the size of each book makes it seem a bit daunting at times when my TBR is already a mountain. But I still plan to tackle these. I even own this particular title after scoring a few of titles from the series at a thrift store. Have you read these or any other titles by Goodkind? Thoughts?

  1. Ha, not to be a know-it-all but it’s 17 books in the series!😀 I’ve read (yet to post my review) Death’s Mistress by him, his latest book, it’s a new series featuring one of the characters from The Sword of Truth series and it listed all his previous books at the beginning.

I’ve heard both good and bad things him, I did enjoy Death’s Mistress though.

  2. Er, I tried reading Wizard’s First Rule couple years ago and gave up on it. Didn’t like it. I forgot why though. It’s easy to get through, but I think there’s insta-love and that probably annoyed me. I’m considering to give it another go since I still have a copy.

And speaking of intimidating series, I’m reading Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time books and I think that has about 14 brick-sized books total. It’s pretty good though Jordan tends to overwrite. I took a break from it last year but I plan to jump back in this year. And I recommend it. 🙂

    1. Ah.. Wheel of Time. I have those (well some of them here) and have put them off also due to size of the series. I need to finish so many other titles before I commit to that. I am glad to know you recommend though. That will make me feel better when I decide to tackle them 😛

  3. Read this great book and then pretend it is a standalone. The rest of the series devolves into Goodkind’s monologuing through his characters on his Ayn Rand style philosophy. If you thought the speech in Atlas Shrugged was long, then imagine that over 3 or 4 of the later books in the series.
But it is a good story for the whole series. So if you can stomach being hit over the head and just enjoy the story, you have some good books ahead of you 🙂

  4. I read Wizards First Rule a few years ago and did not enjoy it. There were a group of women the main character encounters in the latter half (I can’t remember what they’re called) that I thought were extremely unrealistic. I did finish the book, but I trudged through the last third. I haven’t bothered with the rest of the series.

  5. I read the first three or four books in this series years ago when they were doing the TV adaptation and loved what I read of it! They have such a unique paranormal aspect (from what I remember) mixed with all of the magic. I kind of lost interest in them though because back then I was more of a standalone reader and could never stick with a series 😂. I definitely need to pick it up again sometime though. If you do ever decide to take on this series I hope you end up enjoying it, Danielle!! 😁

  6. So far, these Goodreads Monday ALWAYS add a book to my TBR hahaahha I think I might have come across a couple of his books every time I went to a second-hand bookstore, but the …cover… might have kept me away from it. But wow… 800 pages and this book is part of a freaking series… This series sounds insaneeeely long hahahah

    1. It will be some time from now for obvious reasons. You are certainly not the first to mention DNF’ing after the first book. I believe someone else also referred to it as “preachy” so I am very curious to see how I feel about it. And you are one of my favorites to trade thoughts with 😛
