Grace wants out. Out of her house, where her stepfather wields fear like a weapon and her mother makes her scrub imaginary dirt off the floors. Out of her California town, too small to contain her big city dreams. Out of her life, and into the role of Parisian artist, New York director—anything but scared and alone.

Enter Gavin: charming, talented, adored. Controlling. Dangerous. When Grace and Gavin fall in love, Grace is sure it’s too good to be true. She has no idea their relationship will become a prison she’s unable to escape.

Deeply affecting and unflinchingly honest, this is a story about spiraling into darkness—and emerging into the light again.

Okay, so I am very aware this is not a typical read for me, but I am trying to expand this year. Lilly at Lair of Books is fantastic for featuring diverse reads and she reviewed this yesterday. I could not shake the desire to pick this up after reading her review. Check it out here.

Have you read this? what are your thoughts on the synopsis?

Happy Monday!

  1. Oh my.. that blurb freaks me out already… Not sure I’d manage to read it and not become paranoid 😀 haha… no,but joking aside, it does sound like it has potential to be a real emotional rollercoaster! Are you planning to read this in the near future?

  2. Thank you for featuring my review Danielle! I hope to see more books tackle these types of difficult topics. It’s not an easy read at all but I hope it will pave the way for more books & discussion 😉

  4. I too have been trying to expand outside my literary comfort zone. Lately I have been reading more sci-fi and short stories, which while still not as good as my usual fantasy and historical fiction picks have held some surprises here and there.

This book sounds like a heart breaker though, it reminds me a bit of “Go Ask Alice” and looks like it holds a lot of potential for discussion.

  5. Like you, it doesn’t sound like something I’d typically read either but I feel intrigued nonetheless. Sadly, Grace’s experience is one shared by too many people and I think it’s good that an author is highlighting the domestic abuse that is rife in everyday society.
On a side note, that cover is stunning!

    1. Oh La La. Not sure what to say about that! Maybe hold off huh 😉 I think I am going to just order it. I have been in the mood for something different. There may be some triggers for me, but it can be healthy to face those emotions at times I think.

      1. I really don’t trigger on anything written in books for some reason. The only reason I usually steer clear of books that are graphic is my heart usually ends up aching too much for the character, but that even applies to things I have never experienced myself. I do like seeing the different ways people deal with extreme experiences, though, so it depends on my mood if I decide to read tragic stories, or not. I agree, I think it is healthy to confront those emotions from time to time. 🙂
