Friday Favorites: Netflix Originals To Binge, Part I

Friday Favorites

Let’s face, I do not read 24/7. Part of my time is spent binge watching anime, original series and true documentaries. And sometimes I play mom (aka Meme). I am a woman of many hats.

Today, for your viewing pleasure, I have compiled a list of the more memorable original series I have encountered on Netflix. You know the ones. You say one more episode, and then before you realize it, you are trying to figure out how to carry on with life until the next season. So grab a drink and pull up.. well another drink. Let me fill that void..

Binge on This..

mndhntNetflix Original: Mindhunter
Cast: Jonathan GroffHolt McCallanyAnna Torv
IMDb Synopsis: In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters.

Why you want to watch:
Based on the book by retired FBI Special Agent, John Douglas, this is a first hand look at the birth of serial killer profiling.  And if that is not enough to tempt you, Britton’s downright haunting performance as Edmund Kemper should be.

blackmirrorNetflix Original: Black Mirror
Cast:  Daniel LapaineHannah John-Kamen, & many more.
IMDb Synopsis: An anthology series exploring a twisted, high-tech world where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.

Why you want to watch: This ongoing collection of roughly hour-long stand-alone episodes offers a disturbing glimpse into an alternate world where technology and human desires are brought together in a horrifying manner. The end result is unsettling and for great reasons.

dark.jpgNetflix Original: Dark
Cast: Oliver MasucciKaroline EichhornJördis Triebel
IMDb Synopsis: A family saga with a supernatural twist, set in a German town, where the disappearance of two young children exposes the relationships among four families.

Why you want to watch: A German thriller with a dark plot centered around the disappearance of a young boy, it offers a nice twist with stranger elements of science fiction and a dose of the unexpected. Original and immersive, this one manages a successful creep factor on multiple fronts.

erased.jpgNetflix Original: Erased
Cast: Yûki FurukawaTomoka KurotaniReo Uchikawa
IMDb Synopsis: After finding his mom killed, Satoru’s time-traveling ability takes him back 18 years for a chance to prevent her death and those of three classmates.
Why you want to watch: Because they nailed it! If you are familiar with the manga or anime, and a fan, you cannot afford to pass this one up. Beautifully written with an incredible cast, smart directing creates a completely atmospheric experience that draws you in until the very end. I think I must have went through an entire box of tissues.

anneNetflix Original: Anne with an E
Cast: Amybeth McNultyGeraldine JamesR.H. Thomson
IMDb Synopsis: The adventures of a young orphan girl living in the late 19th century. Follow Anne as she learns to navigate her new life on Prince Edward Island, in this new take on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novels.

Why you want to watch: Because it’s Anne, with an “E”! While some viewers seemed to struggle with the slightly darker take and realism incorporated into this childhood classic, the harsher elements added a true air of credibility to an old favorite. It was refreshing and comfortably familiar all at the same time. Simply beautiful and endearing.

Not all-inclusive by any means, the above are a small handful of my favorites.  We certainly cannot forget gems like Stanger Things that have stormed the spotlight for great reason. My list will continue next week 😉 What are some of your favorite series (Netflix or not), to binge when time allows? Have you watched any of my favorites?

Happy Friday!

Danielle ❤

  1. ‘Mindhunter’ looks good.
‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Dark’ appear too dark and graphic for me…
‘Erased’ might be do-able for the squeamish Miss Plumtartt and myself.
I have always been interested in ‘Anne of Green Gables’ because my father is from Prince Edward Island. I may give this one a try.
I am a big fan of the Marvel Netflix series. I am amazed at ‘Daredevil’,Seasons 1 & 2, ‘Jessica Jones’, and ‘Luke Cage’, but was severely let down by ‘Iron Fist’ & ‘The Defenders’. ‘The Punisher’, was very good. These shows are quite violent, but for some reason, Miss Plumtartt and I are not particularly bothered by the violence, as we might normally be. There is a high standard for story-telling in the comic universe. This is particularly pointed in the ‘Daredevil series. The protagonist, knows how to be a hero, but does not know how to be a stand-up guy. Season 1, he becomes that hero. Season 2, he is weak, and stupid. I cannot wait for season 3, where he {hopefully} will actually grow into a man. Jessica is a bad-ass, but still has a vulnerability that you want to help her fill. Luke knows how to be a real man, but is still learning to be a hero. There are secondary characters that are wonderfully filled out and tie the different series together.
    Happy Binging, Danielle!

    1. Ah thanks Icky! I am trying to dive into superheros and some of the Marvel and DC universes more. I hear Daredevil is great and since I want to watch the new Punisher, it might be where I choose to start. I also have Jessica in my queue 😉

Erased is a beautifully done series. The directing is brilliant. You are drawn in to focus on so many details. I recommend watched it subbed though and not dubbed.

I hope you have a great weekend 😊

  2. I love this post Danielle! I may have to incorporate a Friday Favorites every now and then. I’ve been watching The Crown with my husband but I’ve lost a little interest midway through the first season. I really need to try Mindhunter and I hadn’t heard of Dark or Erased but I’m adding those too. I’m so behind on my reading I haven’t watched much tv but I have FOMO for Mindhunter. One of my very favorite series I seriously binged in record time was The Killing..so good!!

    1. Please let me know if you decide to. We can link up and it would be fun! I am behind on life in general haha so I hear you. I have the Killing in my queue so I am thrilled to hear you are enjoying it. I may start it soon. Mindhunter is seriously stellar. The casting and script are incredible. Dark and Erased I really recommend watching with subs instead of dubbed if you can. Happy weekend Renee 💗

      1. I’m enjoying watching Jason Bateman in this role as it is different from his usual. Overall I’m enjoying the show, though there are some really troubling scenes. I think it is the acting that has kept me interested. Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner.

  3. Dark was excellent! I never managed to get on board with all the hype for Manhunter though 😦 I quit watching after 3 episodes, something about the pacing or story just didn’t draw me in the way it has so many others. And I would add The OA to your list, especially for anyone who enjoyed Dark 🙂

    1. Ah thank you! I will look into OA. I think I had it in my queue at one time but then never got to it. Sorry Mindhunter did not work for you. I am fascinated with the profiling processing, so it was hook, line and sinker hehe. Have a great weekend!

  4. I so loved “Mindhunter”, but I told you that! The acting was just superb, and I have a very strange fascination with watching things about minds of serial killers! I think I binged it in a day over the holidays, and I never do that! I just finished “The Crown” over the holidays too; I loved that one as well, but I have a fascination with the royals, haha. I’m still working on “Luther”-I finished season 1 the other night! I wish I had started it over my holiday break, and I would be done with it! “Anne” is on my list next and so is “The Killing”; if you watch “The Killing” before I do, which you probably will, I would love to hear what you think! Hugs! ❤

    1. Luther is another favorite of mine! I just found out that there will be another season, and I am thrilled. I may rewatch before that happens if time allows.

Oh nice! Anne might take an episode or two to fall in with. I think the realism through some for a loop, but worth sticking out. I am going to tackle the Killing soon, but have two series going at the moment. I will let you know 😉

      1. Yes! I saw that they will have season 5 this year, and I’m excited! I stayed up until 2am last night to finish season 4, lol! OMG! I think I love him…he is amazing. Oh well, he can’t replace me 2nd husband (Jon Bon Jovi ❤ ❤ )though, but he is definitely up there!

I'd heard that about Anne, but I think the realism will give it an honest feel. This is coming from someone who has read all the books at least 5 times, and the 1st one 10 or more, LOL. Anne was my favorite book growing up with Little Women a close 2nd. I think I reread them both every summer until I was an adult and have reread LW a few times since then because I have it on my syllabus when I teach American Lit. I think I will dive into Anne next…I'll never get any reading done, lol. I think I'm barely reading. It feels like a chore lately, but oh well!! Yes, let me know about the Killing unless I get to it 1st hahaha 😉 ❤

    1. Thank you Kelly 🙂 I do hope you enjoy “Anne with an E”. I saw some negative reviews, but I think some just struggled to accept the realism and more raw approach. I found myself hooked by the end of the second episode. I hope you enjoy it. I would love to hear your thoughts when you start it. Feel free to drop me a line 🙂

  5. I’ve watched the first episode of Dark, and need to continue with it, but I’m binging Longmire right now and am trying to get through that (it’s six seasons so I have serious binging to do). 🙂 Did you ever see What Happened to Monday? It’s a Netflix original- a movie not a show- but it was good. I’ve also watched (and liked) Marcella, Happy Valley, The Returned (French version), and Shetland. Luther wasn’t bad either.

Clearly I watch too much TV lol!

    1. I loved Luther! I just discovered that a new season is coming and am stoked! I have Longmire on my list of “need to watch”. I also added What Happened to Monday a few weeks ago, but the nonhubs showed interest so I am trying to wait until he is home to watch 😉

  6. OOOh… nice post 🙂 I hope you keep this going because I have such difficulties finding something to really capture my interest on Netflix… I’ve watched some movies on it and I watched about 4-5 episodes of Dark and then it didn’t manage to get me to go back to it… I started watching Frontier and same, 4-5 episodes and meh… Oh… what was the last show I started?…. oh yes, Hemlock Grove! Now this one i will continue watching, even though I haven’t had a chance to watch an episode in over a week 😀 Free time is scarce and when I do have free time, I prioritise reading… OH! hahaha, there’s a shocker- I watched the 2 seasons of Shadowhunters! Man, season 1 was so much gringe I asked every second why I bothered to continue but season 2 was so much better 😀

    1. Oh yes, Hemlock Grove! I was watching it and then something happened and pulled me away. I need to get back into it. Have you tried Penny Dreadfuls? I am loving it! But it is bloody graphic. No way I can watch when kiddos are running around haha. Good stuff though.

  7. My husband loves Dark. He said it’s better than Strangers Things and I wasn’t sure I believed him. (I have a “strange” obsession with Stranger Things.) I might have to watch it now though. It sounds really great.

    1. Dark is fantastic but a bit disturbing at times. So well written and atmospheric. The story is very original. Stranger Things makes an appearance on the second part of my list this Friday. For me, I think it is the added element of nostalgia tjat keeps me coming back!

  8. Netflix sure do know how to make some really great originals. Although they do have some that don’t look ttthhhaaaat appealing too. Love the first 3. I need to check out the last two in the future too.

P.S. Did you see the trailer for season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale?!!? Can’t wait! 😀
