Sunday Sum~Up

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer that I am linking my Sunday Sum-Ups with. Stop by and say hello!

A long week here! And I am mentally tapped. That is not always a bad thing, but I cannot lie, it pains me to say goodbye to the weekend. I have enjoyed catching up on Channel Zero and The Alienist. Some surprise book-mail has thrown my TBR for a loop. But I welcome the unexpected change of pace this month, and am still doing well with my reading challenge. Nothing of excitement to report, and I am “A” okay with that!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you beautiful mamas in the UK ❤ I hope you have had a lovely weekend!

It is always nice to receive an email from a favorite publisher letting you know they are sending along a title they feel you will enjoy! Not only do I love corresponding with Orbit, but admire & respect how personable they remain. So the new read is:

By Rowenna Miller

TORN is the first book in an enchanting debut fantasy series featuring a seamstress who stitches magic into clothing, and the mounting political uprising that forces her to choose between her family and her ambitions, for fans of The Queen of the Tearling.

Sophie is a dressmaker who has managed to open her own shop and lift herself and her brother, Kristos, out of poverty. Her reputation for beautiful ball gowns and discreetly-embroidered charms for luck, love, and protection secures her a commission from the royal family itself — and the commission earns her the attentions of a dashing but entirely unattainable duke.

Meanwhile, Kristos rises to prominence in the growing anti-monarchist movement. Their worlds collide when the revolution’s shadow leader takes him hostage and demands that Sophie place a curse on the queen’s Midwinter costume — or Kristos will die at their hand.

As the proletariat uprising comes to a violent climax, Sophie is torn: between her brother and the community of her birth, and her lover and the life she’s striven to build.

Japanese Suspense

When high school classmates wake up, they find themselves in a perilous situation — restrained in a large dining room. They want answers as to why somebody is holding them hostage, so they try to think of reasons why they are locked up and, more importantly, how they can escape. Fearing their situation is retribution for a past incident with a classmate, they offer up confessions and point blame in order to figure out who the captor is.

      1. My friend bought the paperback to read right before the movie came on HBO, I don’t know why we missed it at the theater, but she didn’t want it back because after reading it every time one of her children, one was an infant and one a toddler, made a strange noise she thought they were possessed. 😂😂😂 I wish I still had it. I must have passed it along myself. I got the ebook for $1.99 last year and have been jonsing to re-read it. 👍

  1. Vinyl? Wow you’re full of surprises, I don’t know anyone who still buys vinyl. My parents just gave away three boxes of vinyl records to a DJ… I like that nostalgia though.. I used to listen to fairytales on a pick-up when I was young! I listed to How To Stop Time, my first ever full audiobook and it was a success :-).

  2. Torn sounds brilliant, Danielle. I am reading The Hat by CS Boyack, which is really fun and light hearted, and listening to The Violin Man’s Legacy by Seaumas Gallacher. Michael and I are reading The Princelings of the East by Jemima Pett.

  3. Yay for book mail! Especially when it’s a surprise. 🙂 It’s about the only time I like getting mail ha ha!

      1. It’s probably something I have to enable maybe, in my blog settings? I don’t know, I’m pretty clueless with that stuff lol. But I will check it out… I agree that would be helpful, yes? 🙂

  4. Torn and Re-Mind both sound sound really good! I’ve already added the latter to my Netflix queue 🙂 And I’ll never turn down surprise book mail, I say as I carefully navigate the overflowing bookshelves in my room…oops. Tonight is another new episode of Counterpart, which I’ve really been enjoying. It’s almost the end of the season so I’m trying to prepare myself for an inevitable cliffhanger :O

      1. I actually say NIN in concert so many times as a teenager I can’t count. I definitely had a self-destructive streak in those mosh pits. And I also saw them when a little unknown band name Marilyn Manson opened for them…GAHHH – now I’m really dating myself!

  5. Ah… you reminded me I want to get that sci-fi collection! Is audiojukebox okay with taking a bit to review a book that length? Seems like it’d take a while to get through, especially at 1x speed. (I listen to most audiobooks at a higher speed but I don’t think you can with MP3 files…)

    1. Oh yes, they are great. I think they ask within “3 Months”. But Susan is fantastic and if I have any issues or need to, I just email her and she never complains haha. It did take me a while to complete. Luckily I have long periods of down time so I can easily clock 6 hours audio in a day 😉 I have not tried upping the speed, so I am not sure with MP3 to be honest.
