FRIDAY FAVORITES: NETFLIX ORIGINALS TO BINGE, PART 3

new Friday fave

Friday Favorites is a post where I incorporate more of what I love into the blog. This includes films, anime, manga, music, you name it. Anything goes.  It will be an opportunity to share some of the things I love and discuss them briefly or at length, depending on my mood 😉

As my queue continues to expand (not quite to the extremes of my TBR but close), I have decided to share more Netflix Originals. I continue to discover series that are definitely binge-worthy, and well, most of us are often seeking that next good watch when we are not immersed in books.

tv

Netflix Originals: Round 3

requiem-e1520840445578Netflix Original: Requiem
Cast:  Lydia WilsonJames FrechevilleSian Reese-Williams
The Skinny: This British thriller offers a nice mix of fantasy and the supernatural. When cello star Matilda Gray’s mother takes her own life, she discovers a concerning link to the disappearance of a Welsch girl years ago and travels to Wales in search of answers.
Pros: Atmospheric and brooding plotline with a slow revelation. Excellent cast.
Cons: An ultimately far-fetched ending that some will struggle with.
My rating: 4/5 – the ending was not enough to deter my love for this series.

tabulaNetflix Original: Tabula Rasa
Cast: Veerle BaetensStijn Van OpstalJeroen Perceval
The Skinny: A Dutch thriller centered around a young woman, Annemie D’Haeze. After an accident leaves her with amnesia and no short-term memory, she becomes the center of a missing person investigation.
Pros: Well developed, complex plot with unexpected twists.
Cons: A few themes that may be sensitive in nature for some.
My rating: 5/5 – I binged this one hard and was caught off guard by the end events.

frankenstein

Netflix Original: The Frankenstein Chronicles
Cast: Sean BeanRichie CampbellTom Ward
The Skinny: John Marlott is an inspector tasked with a gruesome job. He is investigating a set of mysterious murders that appear to be the work of a scientist attempting to reanimate the dead.
Pros: Beautiful period piece set in 19th Century London with superb acting (hello Sean Bean).
Cons: Often graphic and sometimes slow pace.
My rating: 4/5 – Loved the setting, costume, and well.. Sean Bean.

fullmetalalchemistNetflix Original: Fullmetal Alchemist
Cast: Ryôsuke YamadaTsubasa HondaDean Fujioka
The Skinny: This is the live adaptation of the beloved manga and anime series and a film, not actually a series. It follows the Elric brothers whose attempt to use alchemy to revive their mother goes horribly wrong, leaving the younger brother without a body. Now they search for the Philosopher’s Stone, which they believe is the answer to their problems.
Pros: The spirit of the brothers and key elements of the story are captured.
Cons: The graphics felt over the top, and there were a few omissions.
My Rating 3/5 – This is worth a watch if you are fan! Once I let go of my initial hangups, I really enjoyed the film.

The list is a little smaller this round, as I have not been able to watch as much television. What have you been watching? Any thoughts on the above or any recommendations?

Happy Friday!

    1. Haha I am pretty sure the “Original” just means they acquired full licensing rights 😉 But “we” will have to stop stealing 😛 I live off of BBC and Masterpiece personally. It is nice to finally have access through our provider (when up and running) to so many international channels. I admit, I watch very little American television. 90% of watch I watch is not even in English haha.

  1. Agh! I’ve been actively avoiding new TV my TV backlog is almost as long as my TBR! Requiem sounds good…which scares me because the BBC made it and I HATE the BBC with a passion…hmmm I might give it a go at some point, but I will probably forget about it before I clear my backlog in about 20 years time!
I didn’t like The Frankenstein Chronicles I found it clunky and probably the worst acting Sean Bean has ever done which is quite an accomplishment considering some of his flops.
I think we will probably watch Fullmetal Alchemist I’m pretty sure the Hubs has alredy snuck it into our watchlist! lol

    1. I think after about three episode The Frankenstein Chronicles really pulled together for me. Initially I was uncertain, but it worked out. I was impressed with Bean in the end. But I am a fan, for reasons outside of his acting haha ❤ I giggle that you dislike BBC as I live on it haha. What are the odds? Specific reasons? I hope you enjoy Fullmetal, just do not go in with crazy expectations. It is an odd one to adapt into live action, but can be fun enough 🙂

      1. I find the writing and acting on BBC programmes really wooden. It’s like they are writing everything for audiences if 11yr olds. I pretty much only watch US TV quite amusing that. I don’t watch much TV at all though, we watch one episode of something max per day, so can’t get through much!

  2. I love that you loved Tabula Rasa. It’s from Belgium and I’m proud that people from all over the world can discover this show! It’s not really from Netflix itself but I guess they like to add the Netflix Original part haha 😀

    1. The Original only means that they acquired specific licensing 😉 I love when they pick up these series, because it gives me the opportunity to explore more content. I watch a lot of Belgian series when they are available! I tend to be a fan. I enjoyed The Break and Hotel Beau Séjour. Have you watched them?

  3. I also love Sean Bean! I’ll have to check out The Frankenstein Chronicles. My husband and I watched all of the anime for Fullmetal Alchemist when my first son was born and I was up nursing a lot. I still remember sitting on the couch with our laptop and my son on the coffee table in his moses basket! Why weren’t we sleeping??? I don’t know, but it was fun.

  4. I tried The Fullmetal Alchemist… and I didn’t finish it, oops… I think it’s because I am not at all familiar with the original creation and manga is something that I am still to explore.
I have Frankenstein Chronicles added to my list though and Tabula Rasa looks interesting! Thanks for the rec! 🙂

    1. Start with Tabula Rasa, it was my favorite of all! I can see how Fullmetal was a no go (esp. if you are not an existing fan). I would say execute patience with The Frankenstein Chronicles. It was a slow start for me, but got better with time 😉 Let me know about Tabula. Lord, I loved it haha.

  5. I’ll have to save this list! I haven’t been watching tv or movies with few exceptions for “research” or to con my son away from his PlayStation in months. However, after finishing up a big project a few days ago and being in a really crappy place physically, I’ve managed to watch season 5 of Bates Motel, AHS: Roanoke, and am currently working on season 2 of Sense8. All of this since Thursday night? Haha. I probably won’t continue this gluttonous trajectory but, if I do, I’ve added these to the queue! 😊
