This book was released on 2022. A Design Intervention Opportunity Utilizing Artful Rainwater Design (ARD) in Theme Park Design available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Artful Rainwater Design (ARD), an approach to sustainable stormwater management that celebrates rain as a resource, should be a natural fit at theme parks. Like ARD, theme parks use visual spectacle to attract an audience, tell a story, and educate people. To date, however, theme park designs have not incorporated ARD; furthermore, they often do not apply modern sustainable solutions of Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) to manage stormwater. Theme parks designers often still view stormwater as a simple nuisance to be managed primarily through grey infrastructure. This is a neglected opportunity in a major industry: ARD and GSI would complement the guest experience while increasing patrons' curiosity and awareness of sustainable stormwater management. This study developed effective strategies for bringing ARD and GSI to theme parks to improve their environmental sustainability and public education, based on a case study at the Walt Disney Company's Magic Kingdom theme park. A research-through-design process was used to produce six unique ARDs. This design process included several phases: site inventory, site selection, conceptual design, schematic design, and design development. Opportunities, constraints, problems, and solutions encountered during the design process were evaluated to compile a list of strategies. The proposed designs indicate that theme parks can seamlessly integrate ARD into existing themed areas, even where limited space is available to add new features. ARD can often tie into existing downspouts from buildings, with a minimal footprint and no loss of permeable space. However, a lack of connections to existing drainage infrastructure can inspire creative, unique designs. Another key strategy is providing shelter from which to enjoy ARDs during rain events comfortably. By following the recommended strategies, the theme park industry can improve the public perception of rainwater to promote an acceptance of modern stormwater interventions within the public space.

Architecture and the Urban Environment available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This well illustrated text forms a critical appraisal of the place and direction of architecture and urban design in a new world order at the start of the 21st century. The book defines architectural and environmental goals for the New Age by analysing recent contemporary work for its responsiveness to important social and environmental issues and comparing it to successful precedents in architecture. It argues that this new sustainable approach to architecture should be recognised as a new development of mainstream architectural history. This practical guide illustrates current social and natural resource issues to aid architects in their approach to future design. Environmental economics is presented as a potential bridge over the divide between the expectations of the business sector and the concerns of environmental lobbies. Through examples and case studies, an accessible analysis of carefully researched data, drawn from primary sources over four continents, allows the author to outline the current urgency for architects and urban designers to respond with real commitment to current and future changing contexts. This book expresses a holistic vision and proposes a value system in response to the diagnosis. It includes: sound architectural and environmental ethics; end user involvement in the design process and technological advances aimed at sustainable resource use. Includes international case studies from Europe, North America, the Developing world including South Africa, South America and Central Asia.
