Are we alone in the universe? How did life arise on our planet? How do we search for life beyond Earth? These profound questions excite and intrigue broad cross sections of science and society. Answering these questions is the province of the emerging, strongly interdisciplinary field of astrobiology. Life is inextricably tied to the formation, chemistry, and evolution of its host world, and multidisciplinary studies of solar system worlds can provide key insights into processes that govern planetary habitability, informing the search for life in our solar system and beyond. Planetary Astrobiology brings together current knowledge across astronomy, biology, geology, physics, chemistry, and related fields, and considers the synergies between studies of solar systems and exoplanets to identify the path needed to advance the exploration of these profound questions. Planetary Astrobiology represents the combined efforts of more than seventy-five international experts consolidated into twenty chapters and provides an accessible, interdisciplinary gateway for new students and seasoned researchers who wish to learn more about this expanding field. Readers are brought to the frontiers of knowledge in astrobiology via results from the exploration of our own solar system and exoplanetary systems. The overarching goal of Planetary Astrobiology is to enhance and broaden the development of an interdisciplinary approach across the astrobiology, planetary science, and exoplanet communities, enabling a new era of comparative planetology that encompasses conditions and processes for the emergence, evolution, and detection of life.

Download and read online ebook Planetary Systems: A Very Short Introduction write by Raymond T. Pierrehumbert. This book was released on 2021-12-09. Planetary Systems: A Very Short Introduction available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Not long ago, the Solar System was the only example of a planetary system - a star and the bodies orbiting it - that we knew. Now, we know thousands of planetary systems, and have even been able to observe planetary systems at the moment of their birth. This Very Short Introduction explores this new frontier, incorporating the latest research. The book takes the reader on a journey through the grand sweep of time, from the moment galaxies begin to form after the Big Bang to trillions of years in the future when the Universe will be a dilute soup of dim galaxies populated mostly by red dwarf stars. Throughout, Raymond T. Pierrehumbert introduces the latest insights gained from a new generation of telescopes that catch planetary systems at the moment of formation, and to the theoretical advances that attempt to make sense of these observations. He explains how the elements that make up life and the planets on which life can live are forged in the interiors of dying stars, and make their way into rocky planets. He also explores the vast array of newly discovered planets orbiting stars other than our own, and explains the factors that determine their climates. Finally, he reveals what determines how long planetary systems can live, and what happens in their end-times. Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

New Advances in Lunar and Related Planetary Studies available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Many facets of studies in planetary science are dependent on analyzing large volumes of in-situ and spacecraft data. Our understanding of the lunar evolution and its connection to deeper interior layers has been dramatically improved by the so-called deep space exploration missions, including NASA’s lunar reconnaissance orbiter narrow-angle camera, China’s Moon and Mar exploration program, and Chang’e series lunar relay satellite program, in coordination with Earth-based supporting observations. From Apollo 17 lunar surface operations (1972), there are many related operations including China’s lunar and deep space exploration (Chang’e-1 2007; Chang’e-2 2010; Chang’e-3 2013; Chang’e-4 2018; Chang’e-5 2020). On the 50th anniversary of the final Apollo mission to the Moon, this topic will bring together theory, numerical models, and observations capable of advancing our understanding of lunar evolution.
