Excerpt from The American Journal of Photography, 1892, Vol. 13 IF we were asked to give the name of a class of photographic pictures returning handsome profits, and which could be finished easily and quickly, we should say the ferrotype. We mean by this the old-fashioned ferrotype or Collodion positive on thin japanned iron, not the ferro-prussiate or blue print, which is sometimes confounded with the former. A rather startling story made its appearance in one of our recent English contemporaries, to the effect that dry ferrotype plates requiring but very short exposures were now articles of commerce. We have not yet seen them, but should welcome the introduction of such plates if they could be manufactured and sold at reasonable prices. But there are serious difficulties in the way; and to make clear why they are so we shall devote a few moments to a description of the ferrotype picture. Owe have just said that the ferrotype was a collodion positive. Now by this we do not mean a transparent positive like the ordi nary lantern slide, but a thin, delicate negative image, which, when looked at by reflected light, gives a positive picture, the clear shadows of the negative being black from the black backing with which these positives are always mounted. The deposit of silver which forms the opaque portions of a negative becomes brilliantly white when properly developed, and constitutes the high lights of the picture. It must be borne in mind that the positive is never regarded by transmitted light like the negative. In a certain sense, then, the positive may be called a weak negative.
