American Political Parties in the 21st Century available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Since the United States gained its independence, the American political landscape has been dominated by two major political parties—first Whigs and Democrats, and over the last century or so, Democrats and Republicans. In recent years, however, voter disenchantment with the major parties has led to the formation of numerous smaller parties. Often addressing a particular concern (such as the environment) and operating on a local, state or regional level, these parties generally focus on affecting political decisions regarding specific topics of interest. This book catalogs and describes more than 180 political parties that are active in the United States today. Information has been gathered largely from the parties themselves, via direct contact with representatives and from their websites. From the Alaskan Independence Party to the Young Democratic Socialists, entries contain the party name, address, telephone and fax numbers, launch date, and email and website addresses. A review of the party’s history and notable activities as well as an abbreviated summary of each party’s platform is also provided. Finally, a listing of any affiliates—and their contact information—is also included where applicable.

Local Party Organizations in the Twenty-First Century available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. While the media pay the most attention to the actions of the national political committees, political scientists have long emphasized the key role of local party organizations. Despite sweeping changes in the political environment, remarkably little research has sought to understand precisely how these local parties are structured, what they do, and whether they have any impact on the political system. In Local Party Organizations in the Twenty-First Century, Douglas D. Roscoe and Shannon Jenkins use data collected from more than 1,100 local parties in forty-eight states to provide the most thorough examination of the role of local political parties in the US political system, something that has been lacking in contemporary accounts of the role of parties. They show that party organizations take particular forms and engage in certain activities because political actors find these forms and activities useful for winning elections. While past research has centered primarily on the role of national and state political parties in the United States, this book demonstrates the continuing central role of local political parties in the electoral process, providing readers with a more comprehensive understanding of the US party system.

The Los Angeles Times bestseller "Intelligent....Their book represents a burgeoning literary genre--studies of Roveology, which is the art of using what Republicans embrace, marketing information and what they theoretically are wary of, federal power, to elect more Republicans." --George Will, Newsweek "Persuasive....Hamburger and Wallsten discuss in great detail the misuse of executive branch power for raw political purposes." --Mark Schmitt, Washington Monthly The single greatest priority for the Bush administration has been the consolidation of executive power. That power has been wielded like never before for partisan gain: to win current and future elections for Republicans across America. The Democrats had everything going for them in the 2006 election, but all the obstacles Republicans have been constructing paid off by denying them an even bigger win. Democrats are confident going into 2008, but the Republican advantages endure. Through a rigorous examination of the GOP machine, this book reveals how a true Democratic resurgence faces steep barriers--barriers erected by conservatives who have worked to build their dominant position since the days of Barry Goldwater. "Incisive journalistic digging...One Party Country does a good job of spelling out the GOP electoral strategy objectively and in detail." --The Christian Science Monitor
