Excerpt from An Account of the Operations of the Fifth Army Corps I felt, though denied the official investigation which I had 'applied for, that I could leave my justification before the public to the ultimate publication of the Official reports. I trusted, too, that Gen. Sheridan's report would do me justice, and that he could not fail in it to acknowledge that his treat ment Of me was hasty and based on erroneous impressions. The publication of this report, dated May 16, in the Official Gazette, disappointed this hope, for therein, as far as mention is made of me, it is in terms of disparagement and in efforts to justify his inconsiderate action. After this publication I thought the investigation I sought could not long be denied, and I have remained silent till now, fully believing an impartial investigation would relieve me Of the imputations of Gen. Sheridan, and place just. Censure on those by whom I have been wronged. To bring my professional grievances before the public is a thing from which I have shrunk, and I do not do so now from any love of controversy. If circumstances were different I should be glad to avoid it; but the facts being little known and understood, and there being many misrepresentations, I am under this necessity. I have, therefore, prepared the follow ing narrative of facts in much detail, so that each one can ex amine and judge for himself, as, I presume, all fair-minded men, whose time will permit, will gladly do. Excerpt from The Fifth Army Corps (Army of the Potomac): A Record of Operations During the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861-1865 As men differ very much, not only in their ideas but in their style of writing, the undersigned concluded that it was best to commence with the first chapter and produce the work in his own way - poor and simple as that may be. He has endeavored to tell the story of the noble old Corps, with as many details as was permissible with the extent of the work, and trusts that those who solicited him to take upon himself this task will not be disappointed in what he has produced. An;, In the World War (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from 115th Infantry, U. S. An;, In the World War Many volumes will be written discussing the causes, describing the decisive battles and delineating the character and ability of the leading generals. The general progress of the great struggle will be told in detail. The location of army corps will be indicated, and the way they fought. _divisions will be followed with some interest probably, but little notice will be given to the life and activities of individual regiments, for in this gigantic con ict, where millions are struggling, a regiment is a very insignificant factor. The historian, as -he weighs the forces that determined the course of the war and the final result, will attach little importance to the work of the l l5th Infantry. But mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives, sweethearts and children will be more interested in the regiment son or brother or father was in, than in the war itself. So, for the sake of those loved ones who stayed at home, writing letters, sending candy, cakes and tobacco, knitting sweaters and socks, saying prayers - for the sake of those who kept the Home Fires Burning - for the sake of keeping fond memories fresh and noble deeds alive, we tell the story of the l l5th Infantry.' Records of Living Officers of the United States Army (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from Records of Living Officers of the United States Army The object of this book is to bring together within the compass of a single volume the records of the officers of the army now living. It differs from any existing book containing officers' records in that it embraces all living officers, whether graduates of the Military Academy, or appointees from the ranks, or from civil life; and also in being complete in one volume. The original intention of the publishers was to have the records as full and explicit as to all the details of the services of the officers represented as it was possible to make them, with due regard to the space available. This of course involved co-operation on the part of the officers themselves, and to that cud the publishers made earnest effort, by means of circulars and advertisements, to secure from every officer in the army the facts of his record as he wished it presented. Many officers responded, but many did not, and what the book lacks in respect of fullness as to details is attributable to this failure on the part of a largo number of officers to respond to the often repeated solicitation of the publishers. The thanks of the publishers arc due to Colonel Guy V. Henry, U.S.A., for voluntarily placing at their service his valuable book of "Civilian Appointments," and to Captain Geo. F. Price, 5th Cavalry, for similarly giving them the use of his interesting work, "Across the Continent with the Fifth Cavalry," both of which have been freely availed of. They also tender their thanks to General Horatio G. Wright, chief of engineers, and to General Godfrey Weitzel, of the same corps, General S. B. Holabird, quartermaster-general, General Stephen V. Benet, chief of ordnance, Colonel M. I. Ludington, Major W. B. Hughes, and Captain John L. Clem, of the quartermaster's department, Colonel S. C. Lyford, of the ordnance, and to Colonel John B. Nicholson, recorder of the grand commandery of the military order of the Loyal Legion, for favors and assistance received. They also desire to make acknowledgment for assistance derived from the use of Major Wilhelm's "Military and Naval Encyclopaedia."
