It was hypothesized that a sequence of art therapy using anger management directives would reduce anger in adolescent males residing in a juvenile detention facility. Anger was measured by the Adolescent Anger Rating Scale (AARS) (Burney & Kromrey 2001). The AARS is a 20-item self-report inventory requiring respondents to determine and rate between three distinct types of anger (instrumental anger, reactive anger, and anger control), using a 4-point rating scale. Art therapy directives were based on Feindler and Ecton's (1986) anger control training program. These directives involved the use of age appropriate materials to address the issue of anger with an adolescent male population. Sixteen juveniles ranging in age from 14 to 16 participated in this study. Contrary to expectations, both the experimental and control groups demonstrated equivalent positive changes (reduction in AARS scores).

This new and timely second edition, updated with an expanded discussion of arts-based processes and additional instructions and heartfelt client narratives, continues in the trajectory of the first, promising to shape and provide guidance to both current and next generation of art therapists in the studio-based approach to working with a challenging and often maligned population. It continues to offer much in the way of guidance, motivation, and practical advice around the use of art making as the central curative component when developing therapeutic relationships with hurt and troubled teens. The author’s initial focus is on understanding the developmental issues facing adolescents and how these affect the psychotherapeutic treatment. This includes an outline of the phases of therapy: Resistance Phase, Imaging Phase, Immersion Phase, and Letting Go Phase. The second primary focus is devoted to the art as therapy approach to art psychotherapy, with several chapters examining components of this model. The final focus presents the author’s therapeutic approach to working with adolescents through responsive art making. A positive by-product of the book is that the reader will find many practical suggestions regarding materials, artistic tasks, and therapeutic techniques. In addition, the text is greatly enhanced by the powerful illustrations that highlight the chapters’ case narratives. This new edition continues to share the author’s essential philosophical, technical, pragmatic, and ethical aspects of practicing art therapy that have made him a standard-bearer for those who believe in the therapeutic power of art. The Dynamics of Art as Therapy with Adolescents should be a cornerstone text for any Adolescent Art Therapy course.

Professionals working in a range of clinical settings are regularly called upon to work with angry clients, and they may find their skills and resources for working with this powerful emotion limited. Art Therapy and Anger demonstrates how the non-verbal medium of art therapy provides an ideal outlet for the expression of thoughts and feelings that are too complex and painful to put into words, presenting a new and practical approach to dealing with this area of need. Marian Liebmann argues that clients of all ages will benefit from the art-making process, which helps them to slow down and consider their emotions more calmly. The tangible product of their efforts allows clients to assess and react to what they have depicted, providing a lucid and safe framework for better understanding the causes and effects of their anger. This book draws together contributions from art therapists who work in a wide variety of contexts, including work with offenders, mental health clients, clients with brain injury and those with cancer, with the view of helping clients to manage their anger more constructively. This positive, practical volume will be of great interest to art therapists and students, as well as practitioners working with angry clients in various fields such as mental health, probation, counselling and medicine.

Download and read online ebook ART THERAPY WITH CHRONIC PHYSICALLY ILL ADOLESCENTS: Exploring the Effectiveness of Medical Art Therapy as a Complementary Treatment write by Ruth R. Luginbuehl-Oelhafen. This book was released on 2009. ART THERAPY WITH CHRONIC PHYSICALLY ILL ADOLESCENTS: Exploring the Effectiveness of Medical Art Therapy as a Complementary Treatment available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Art Therapy with Chronic Physically Ill Adolescents explores the effectiveness of art therapy as a primary intervention with an adolescent population with chronic physical illnessOCoin this particular case, with adolescents in chronic renal failure either on hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or after kidney transplantation. The hypothesis is that art therapy: (1) facilitates expression of emotions through artwork, ideally including verbal expression; (2) enhances self-esteem and identity; (3) helps them cope with their chronic physical illness; and (4) finally, offers an opportunity to vent anger and frustration (catharsis). By getting a safe place to explore issues related not only to the developmental stage but also to the conditions of chronic physical illness, these teenagers may begin to discover their individual strengths through art therapy, rather than dwell primarily on their individual weaknesses. In essence, the book will explore whether art therapy can be a means by which this population could be helped to accept and integrate their chronic physical conditions into their lives and to find an appropriate place in our society. In addition, the book will investigate whether art therapy could become a sanctuary, one in which the patient is allowed to keep control, to make his own decisions, and to explore and develop a sense of freedom in an overwhelming controlling environment. Consisting of four chapters, Chapter 1 provides an in-depth perspective on literature review and adolescence as a developmental stage. The psychological impact of chronic physical illness in adolescence, creativity and art therapy, medical art therapy, and the creative process is discussed. Chapter 2 studies methodology, independent variables, settings, procedures, materials used, and the gathering of data. Chapter 3 addresses case histories, their artwork the short-term treatment group, and the long-term treatment group. Seven clients and examples of their artwork are presented. Chapter 4 discusses results, conclusions and ideas for further studies."
