This book was released on 2009. The Instructional Use of Culturally Relevant and Highly Visual Material of Fifth Grade English Foreign Language Students in a Colombian Public School available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Resumen: There are many reasons why English language teachers may choose to construct their own teaching materials, despite the availability of commercially produced materials. This paper presents some of these reasons by examining advantages of teacher produced materials. It also suggests factors that teachers should take into account when designing materials for diverse learners and present a set of guidelines for designing effective materials for teaching and learning English. Effective strategies used to overcome interaction and motivation difficulties among students in the classroom are of crucial importance for second language (L2) learners. Therefore, L2 learners might benefit from instruction on how to use culturally relevant and highly visual materials in the classroom to cope such difficulties. In Colombia, much research has been conducted on use of materials in an English foreign language classroom, the means used to overcome strategies and learning styles of the students. Due to differing theoretical perspectives, researchers have disagreed about the question of whether such strategy training is beneficial. However, few studies have specifically considered cultural and visual material strategies from a pedagogical point of view. in this paper, we will first briefly present the importance of using culturally relevant and highly visual materials with EFL students, some conceptualizations, and samples of studies about cultural material. Then, we will discuss the advantages of the application and design of the material done by the facilitators to contextualize the topics, arguing in favor of it. This will be reinforced by descriptions of research projects that analyzed the use and impact of culturally relevant material in foreign classrooms. Findings suggest that culturally relevant material will provide learners the opportunity to apply their backgroundknowledge in all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening)...

The research, lessons, and concepts included in the book present innovative ideas in EAL education. The chapters are the result of a professional learning program for 30 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers from Brazil, held at the University of Miami’s School of Education and Human Development in the Spring semester of 2018. The program, entitled “Six-Week English Language Certificate Program for High School English Teachers from Brazil (PDPI),” contained several components related to language development and methodology, including orality, reading, writing, linguistic and grammatical knowledge, and interculturality. The program was guided by the principle of multiliteracies, with a focus on English language development through new possibilities to participate in meaning making that incorporates verbal, visual, body language, gestures, and audiovisual resources.

Six studies were carried out by the in-service teacher students from the Master\'s in Education with Emphasis on English Didactics at the School of Education in Universidad Externado de Colombia, and two professors from the same Emphasis conducted one study. It illustrates the students\' research process focused on English didactic issues relevant to the EFL community of teachers. This issue comprises seven chapters. The first article reports the results of developing undergraduates\' argumentative competen ce through ln-dass debates on social issues supported by the design and implementation of six contextualized workshops and subsidiary worksheets at a private university. The second describes the implementation of contextualized materials, based on topics of students\' interest in an EFL context, to develop their reading comprehension in a state-funded school. The third explores how the design and implementation of workshops, focused on phonemic awareness and sensory-based activities, fostered the development of preschoolers\' writing at a private school. The fourth presents the results of implementing materials based on role-plays to shape fourth-grade students\' interaction skills at a private school. The fifth describes the process of designing and implementing contextualized materials, based on the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLlL) approach, to develop two oral communication micro skills (body language and fluency) among preschoolers in a bilingual private school. The sixth reports the results of implementing songs to improve students\' learning of English and artistic skills at a state-funded school. The seventh describes the impact of both contextualized materials and comic strips on eight graders\' writing process in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) dassroom, at a female state-funded school. Each chapter describes the corresponding research process undergone by the students and the professors, which entail the theoretical considerations, instructional and research designs, data analysis and findings, and condusions, pedagogical implications and questions for further research in relation to their research concern.
