Atomic Physics 15 extends the series of books containing the invited papers presented at each International Conference on Atomic Physics (ICAP). The ICAP, held every two years, provides the atomic physics community with an opportunity to review problems of current interest and to consider future directions in the field. This fifteenth meeting also celebrated the centenary of the discovery of the Zeeman effect.

Download and read online ebook Advances in Molecular Vibrations and Collision Dynamics write by . This book was released on 1998-09-25. Advances in Molecular Vibrations and Collision Dynamics available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume focuses on molecular clusters, bound by van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds. Twelve chapters review a wide range of recent theoretical and experimental advances in the areas of cluster vibrations, spectroscopy, and reaction dynamics. The authors are leading experts, who have made significant contributions to these topics. The first chapter describes exciting results and new insights in the solvent effects on the short-time photo fragmentation dynamics of small molecules, obtained by combining heteroclusters with femtosecond laser excitation. The second is on theoretical work on effects of single solvent (argon) atom on the photodissociation dynamics of the solute H2O molecule. The next two chapters cover experimental and theoretical aspects of the energetics and vibrations of small clusters. Chapter 5 describes diffusion quantum Monte Carlo calculations and non additive three-body potential terms in molecular clusters. The next six chapters deal with hydrogen-bonded clusters, reflecting the ubiquity and importance of hydrogen-bonded networks. The final chapter provides the microscopic theory of the dynamics and spectroscopy of doped helium cluster, highly quantum systems whose unusual properties have been studied extensively in the past couple of years.

C N Yang, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th Century, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1957, jointly with T D Lee, for their investigation of the relationship (parity symmetry) between left- and right-handed states, leading to a discovery that astounded the world of physics ? the nonconservation of parity by elementary particles and their reactions. With R L Mills, he created the concept of non-abelian gauge theories, the foundation of the modern description of elementary particles and forces. Professor Yang has worked on a wide range of subjects in physics, but his abiding interests have been symmetry principles, particle physics, and statistical mechanics. In 1999, a symposium was held at the State University of New York at Stony Brook to mark the retirement of C N Yang as Einstein Professor and Director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, and to celebrate his many achievements. A noteworthy selection of the papers presented at the symposium appears in this invaluable volume in honor of Professor Yang.
