The overall objective of the program was to set up a materials characterization lab and conduct fundamental research on advanced silicon photovoltaic materials to improve basic understanding of minority carrier lifetime and defects in silicon. This report shows that in addition to establishig a state-of-the-art materials research lab, device modelling, and cell fabrication capabilities, some new tools such as Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS) and Photoconductive Decay (PCD) lifetime measurements, were also developed to add more depth and accuracy to the lifetime and defect characterization in silicon.
