Chemistry and its products today play an important role in almost all industrial ac tivities. Chemistry has captured our homes. We are supplied with new articles in an ever-increasing stream. New uses are being discovered. Old products disappear. Continuing and fast expansion is expected for the chemical industry in its proper sense. The reason for this is, of course, that chemistry has created products which meet requirements that we consider urgent or which in different ways make work easier, and make us more efficient, thereby increasing our standard of living in a wide sense: in terms of money, more spare time, social security, better education and better public health services. But a high standard of living also implies a good living environment. A lot of what has been done in praiseworthy aspiration of a better means of support and an im proved standard of living has involved a wasting of non-renewable natural resources. The products themselves or their waste products may pose a threat to the objectives we are trying to attain.

Download and read online ebook Bioremediation and Sustainability write by Romeela Mohee. This book was released on 2012-04-02. Bioremediation and Sustainability available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Bioremediation and Sustainability is an up-to-date and comprehensive treatment of research and applications for some of the most important low-cost, "green," emerging technologies in chemical and environmental engineering Sustainable development requires the development and promotion of environmental management and a constant search for green technologies to treat a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial habitats contaminated by increasing anthropogenic activities with the main sources of contaminants being the chemical industries. Bioremediation is a technique that uses living organisms in order to degrade or transform contaminants into their less toxic forms. It is based on the existence of microorganisms with the capacity to attack the compounds on the enzymatic level. Bioremediation is an increasingly popular low-cost alternative to conventional methods for treating wastes and contaminated media with the possibility to degrade these contaminants using natural microbial activity mediated by different consortia of microbes. Over the last few years, the scientific literature has revealed the progressive emergence of various bioremediation techniques. Bioremediation and Sustainability presents an up-to-date and comprehensive collection of chapters prepared in bioremediation technology research and applications. The strategies covered in this volume can be applied in situ or ex situ, depending on the site in which they will be applied. In situ is the treatment done in the site of the contamination, and ex situ involves the removal of soil or water to subsequent treatment. There is a wide variety of techniques that have been developed in the past and are covered in this volume, such as natural attenuation, bioaugmentation, biostimulation, biosorption, composting, phytoremediation, rhizoremediation, and bioleaching.

Bioprocess Engineering for a Green Environment available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Bioprocess Engineering for a Green Environment examines numerous bioprocesses that are crucial to our day-to-day life, specifically the major issues surrounding the production of energy relating to biofuels and waste management. The nuance of this discussion is reflected by the text’s chapter breakdown, providing the reader with a fulsome investigation of the energy sector; the importance of third-generation fuels; and the application of micro- and macroalgae for the production of biofuels. The book also provides a detailed exploration of biocatalysts and their application to the food industry; bioplastics production; conversion of agrowaste into polysaccharides; as well as the importance of biotechnology in bio-processing. Numerous industries discharge massive amounts of effluents into our rivers, seas, and air systems. As such, two chapters are dedicated to the treatment of various pollutants through biological operation with hopes of achieving a cleaner, greener, environment. This book represents the most comprehensive study of bioprocessing—and its various applications to the environment—available on the market today. It was furthermore written with various researchers in mind, ranging from undergraduate and graduate students looking to enhance their knowledge of the topics presented to scholars and engineers interested in the bioprocessing field, as well as members of industry and policy-makers. Provides a comprehensive overview of bioprocesses that apply to day-to-day living. Is learner-centered, providing detailed diagrams for easy understanding. Explores the importance of biocatalysts and their applications to the food industry, as well as bioplastics production. Examines the unique capabilities of bioprocess engineering and its ability to treat various pollutants. .
