This book was released on 2012. Climatic and Topographic Controls on Soil Carbon Storage and Dynamics in the Indian Himalaya available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Soil organic carbon affects soil fertility and agricultural production, and organic C storage can also mitigate increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations on decadal time scales or longer. However, soil organic C storage is dependent on climatic conditions, especially temperature and precipitation, and changes in these parameters associated with climate change can act as feedback mechanisms to atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The objective of this study is to evaluate regional organic carbon abundance in northern India across orographically-limited precipitation regimes. We hypothesized that the existence of a soil organic carbon (SOC) gradient corresponding to these bioclimatic barriers, a result of this large precipitation and assumed vegetation discrepancy. Samples were collected from the Kulu Lesser Himalaya, Lahul Himalaya, and Zanskar and measured for SOC/TN inventory as well as?14C and d13C analysis of soil organic matter (SOM). Average annual carbon accumulation and C turnover time were estimated for selected soil chronosequences, and results varied widely among the areas investigated. It was revealed that soil organic C stocks in the Indian Himalaya are sensitive to precipitation, C3 vegetation has been consistently dominant up to ~6ka B.P., and rates of accumulation and turnover are influenced greatly by variations in climate, vegetation, and topography. Examining the distribution of soil organic carbon stock can be useful in helping to predict the potential effects of warming and precipitation on C storage in this region.

This book was released on 2019-07-23. Carbon Management for Promoting Local Livelihood in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) Region available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This book contributes to our understanding of linkages between carbon management and local livelihoods by taking stock of the existing evidence and drawing on field experiences in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region, an area that provides fresh water to more than 2 billion people and supports the world’s largest population of pastoralists and millions of livestock. This edited volume addresses two main questions: 1. Does carbon management offer livelihood opportunities or present risks, and what are they? 2. Do the attributes of carbon financing alter the nature of livelihood opportunities and risks? Chapters analyze the most pressing deficiencies in understanding carbon storage in both soils and in above ground biomass, and the related social and economic challenges associated with carbon sequestration projects. Chapters deliver insights to both academics from diverse disciplines (natural sciences, social sciences and engineering) and to policy makers.

Download and read online ebook The Himalayan Cryosphere: write by N.C. Pant. This book was released on 2018-08-31. The Himalayan Cryosphere: available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Himalaya mountains contain not only one of the largest concentrations of ice outside the polar regions, but contribute to the hydrological requirements of large populations spread over seven nations. The exceptionally high elevations of this low-latitude cryosphere presents a natural laboratory and archives to study climate–tectonics interactions as well as regional v. global climate influences. The existing base-level data on the Himalayan cryosphere are highly variable. Several climate fluctuations occurred during the late Quaternary (MIS1–MIS5, especially the last c. 100 ka), which led to the evolution of the Himalayan landscape. Detailed studies of these archives, along with those of the present cryosphere and related hydrosphere, are essential for understanding the controls on present and future hydrology of the glacial-fed mountain rivers. This volume, a follow-up of the XII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Science, Goa (A SCAR symposium), provides new data from locales spread over the entire Himalaya region and from Tibet. It provides a glimpse of the late Quaternary cryosphere, as well as a discussion in the last section on sustainability in the context of geohazard mitigations as well as the hydrological budget.
