Specialist languages, such as the languages of law, business, aviation, football, and politics, can be perceived as highly conventionalized, semi-natural and not fully autonomous communication codes limited to specific, and predominantly formal, situations. A large number of them can be best characterized by subject matter and semantic content, but the most important distinctive element in their make-up is the frame of context in which they are embedded. This volume discusses various ways of approaching the problems associated with the very broad phenomenon of specialist languages by means of the analytical mechanisms and theoretical conceptions developed within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics. The volume includes research carried out by world-renowned experts in the field.

Conceptual Metaphors as an Organisational Framework of the Specialist Language of IT available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Magdalena Krawiec provides insight into the underlying conceptual structure of information technology and gives a plausible account of the patterns of metaphorical conceptualisation manifested in the specialist language of IT. Conceptual metaphors map our concrete experience onto abstract experiences, so as to effortlessly get hold of new emergent concepts. On the one hand, our ability to make our world thinkable rests on the use of our past experiences, whereas on the other hand, IT specialists familiarise themselves with yet unknown conceptual structures through the interaction with the specialist scenery. Specialists' thinkability of the specialist surroundings is grounded in their perception of similarity which enables them to adapt both conceptually and linguistically to their specialist practice.

Download and read online ebook Cognitive Linguistics in the English as a foreign language classroom write by Dorothee Kohl-Dietrich. This book was released on 2018. Cognitive Linguistics in the English as a foreign language classroom available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Cognitive Linguistics takes an experientialist approach towards language, emphasizing the centrality of (physical) experience for cognitive development. That is, cognition is regarded as embodied, and language - as part of the human cognitive system - is shaped by how human beings interact with their physical and social environment. Thus, language is usage-based and form-meaning mappings can be explained and systematized on the basis of their conceptual motivation. Despite the pedagogical potential of this theory, Cognitive Linguistic applications in foreign language teaching and learning are still in their initial stages and empirical research testing the effect of Cognitive-Linguistic teaching approaches in real classroom settings is rather scarce. The aim of this monograph is to provide insight into key tenets of the Cognitive Linguistic framework under the premise of their relevance for foreign language pedagogy. Empirical studies are presented focusing on how phrasal verbs can be taught from a Cognitive Linguistic perspective via awareness-raising methods. Based on statistical analyses and considering individual learner variables such as language aptitude, cognitive load and how students evaluated their own learning outcome, the author discusses the merits of a Cognitive Linguistic approach to phrasal verbs.
