Control of Partially-Known Dynamical Systems available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The main objective of this monograph is to develop efficient techniques for tackling the control problems of partially-known dynamical systems. This broad class of systems has a fundamental feature: Knowledge of the dynamic characteristics of the control plant is not complete. In one category, the missing knowledge is due to the unmodeled high-frequency parasitics (adaptive systems). In another category, some of the model parameters are unknown-but-bounded (uncertain systems). The book concentrates on reduced-order adaptive control schemes and deterministic stabilizing control methodologies. Special emphasis has been placed on presenting new results, establishing efficient control laws and treating both small-scale and large-scale problems. Effects of external disturbances, state parameter errors and interconnection patterns have been investigated and dealt with in contructing various controller structures.

Estimation of Dependences Based on Empirical Data available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Twenty-?ve years have passed since the publication of the Russian version of the book Estimation of Dependencies Based on Empirical Data (EDBED for short). Twen- ?ve years is a long period of time. During these years many things have happened. Looking back, one can see how rapidly life and technology have changed, and how slow and dif?cult it is to change the theoretical foundation of the technology and its philosophy. I pursued two goals writing this Afterword: to update the technical results presented in EDBED (the easy goal) and to describe a general picture of how the new ideas developed over these years (a much more dif?cult goal). The picture which I would like to present is a very personal (and therefore very biased) account of the development of one particular branch of science, Empirical - ference Science. Such accounts usually are not included in the content of technical publications. I have followed this rule in all of my previous books. But this time I would like to violate it for the following reasons. First of all, for me EDBED is the important milestone in the development of empirical inference theory and I would like to explain why. S- ond, during these years, there were a lot of discussions between supporters of the new 1 paradigm (now it is called the VC theory ) and the old one (classical statistics).

Unlike the conventional research for the general theory of stability, this mono graph deals with problems on stability and stabilization of dynamic systems with respect not to all but just to a given part of the variables characterizing these systems. Such problems are often referred to as the problems of partial stability (stabilization). They naturally arise in applications either from the requirement of proper performance of a system or in assessing system capa bility. In addition, a lot of actual (or desired) phenomena can be formulated in terms of these problems and be analyzed with these problems taken as the basis. The following multiaspect phenomena and problems can be indicated: • "Lotka-Volterra ecological principle of extinction;" • focusing and acceleration of particles in electromagnetic fields; • "drift" of the gyroscope axis; • stabilization of a spacecraft by specially arranged relative motion of rotors connected to it. Also very effective is the approach to the problem of stability (stabilization) with respect to all the variables based on preliminary analysis of partial sta bility (stabilization). A. M. Lyapunov, the founder of the modern theory of stability, was the first to formulate the problem of partial stability. Later, works by V. V. Rumyan tsev drew the attention of many mathematicians and mechanicians around the world to this problem, which resulted in its being intensively worked out. The method of Lyapunov functions became the key investigative method which turned out to be very effective in analyzing both theoretic and applied problems.

Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This is a book on optimal control problems (OCPs) for partial differential equations (PDEs) that evolved from a series of courses taught by the authors in the last few years at Politecnico di Milano, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The book covers the whole range spanning from the setup and the rigorous theoretical analysis of OCPs, the derivation of the system of optimality conditions, the proposition of suitable numerical methods, their formulation, their analysis, including their application to a broad set of problems of practical relevance. The first introductory chapter addresses a handful of representative OCPs and presents an overview of the associated mathematical issues. The rest of the book is organized into three parts: part I provides preliminary concepts of OCPs for algebraic and dynamical systems; part II addresses OCPs involving linear PDEs (mostly elliptic and parabolic type) and quadratic cost functions; part III deals with more general classes of OCPs that stand behind the advanced applications mentioned above. Starting from simple problems that allow a “hands-on” treatment, the reader is progressively led to a general framework suitable to face a broader class of problems. Moreover, the inclusion of many pseudocodes allows the reader to easily implement the algorithms illustrated throughout the text. The three parts of the book are suitable to readers with variable mathematical backgrounds, from advanced undergraduate to Ph.D. levels and beyond. We believe that applied mathematicians, computational scientists, and engineers may find this book useful for a constructive approach toward the solution of OCPs in the context of complex applications.
