Controlling the Past, Owning the Future available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. What are the political usesÑand misusesÑof archaeology in the Middle East? In answering this question, the contributors to this volume lend their regional expertise to a variety of case studies, including the TalibanÕs destruction of Buddhas in Afghanistan, the commercialization of archaeology in Israel, the training of Egyptian archaeology inspectors, and the debate over Turkish identity sparked by the film Troy, among other provocative subjects. Other chapters question the ethical justifications of archaeology in places that have Òalternative engagements with the material past.Ó In the process, they form various views of the role of the archaeologist, from steward of the historical record to agent of social change. The diverse contributions to this volume share a common framework in which the political use of the past is viewed as a process of social discourse. According to this model, political appropriations are seen as acts of social communication designed to accrue benefits to particular groups. Thus the contributors pay special attention to competing social visions and the filters these impose on archaeological data. But they are also attentive to the potential consequences of their own work. Indeed, as the editors remind us, ÒpeopleÕs lives may be affected, sometimes dramatically, because of the material remains that surround them.Ó Rounding out this important volume are critiques by two top scholars who summarize and synthesize the preceding chapters.

A radical manifesto for the transformation of post-pandemic politics The question of ownership is the critical fault line of our times. During the pandemic this issue has only become more divisive. Since March 2020 we have witnessed the extraordinary growth of asset manager capitalism and the explosive concentration of wealth within the hands of the already super-rich. This new oligarchy controls every part of our social and economics lives. In the face of crisis, the authors warn that mere redistribution within current forms of ownership is not enough; our goal must be to go beyond the limits of the current system, dominated by private enclosure and unequal ownership. Only by reimagining how our economy is owned and by whom can we address the crises of our time - from the fallout of the pandemic to ecological collapse - at their roots. Building from this insight, the authors argue the systemic change we need hinges on a new era of democratic ownership: a reinvention of the firm as a vehicle for collective endeavour and meeting social needs. Against the new oligarchy of the platform giants, a digital commons that uses our data for collective good, not private profit. In place of environmental devastation, a new agenda of decommodification - of both nature and needs - with a Green New Deal and collective stewardship of the planet’s natural wealth. Together, these proposals offer a road map to owning the future, and building a better world.

Veteran science journalist Seth Shulman takes us on a shocking journey through today's battles for control over the intangible new assets - genes, software, databases, and scientific information - that make up the lifeblood of the new economy. We meet doctors who sue colleagues for using new medical procedures they claim to own. We find university researchers thrown in jail for "stealing" their own ideas; software firms holding the entire industry for ransom over basic, widely used programming techniques; and life-saving cancer treatments kept from dying patients by legal wrangles over the underlying technology.
