Covers the vastly expanding subject of oxidative processes mediated by copper ions within biological systems Copper-mediated biological oxidations offer a broad range of fundamentally important and potentially practical chemical processes that cross many chemical and pharmaceutical disciplines. This newest volume in the Wiley Series on Reactive Intermediates in Chemistry and Biology is divided into three logical areas within the topic of copper/oxygen chemistry— biological systems, theory, and bioinorganic models and applications—to explore the biosphere for its highly evolved and thus efficient oxidative transformations in the discovery of new types of interactions between molecular oxygen and copper ion. Featuring a diverse collection of subject matter unified in one complete and comprehensive resource, Copper-Oxygen Chemistry probes the fundamental aspects of copper coordination chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and biological chemistry to reveal both the biological and chemical aspects driving the current exciting research efforts behind copper-oxygen chemistry. In addition, Copper-Oxygen Chemistry: Addresses the significantly increasing literature on oxygen-atom insertion and carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions as well as enantioselective oxidation chemistries Progresses from biological systems to spectroscopy and theory, and onward to bioinorganic models and applications Covers a wide array of reaction types such as insertion and dehydrogenation reactions that utilize the cheap, abundant, and energy-containing O2 molecule With thorough coverage by prominent authors and researchers shaping innovations in this growing field, this valuable reference is essential reading for bioinorganic chemists, as well as organic, synthetic, and pharmaceutical chemists in academia and industry.

Download and read online ebook The Chemistry of Copper, Silver and Gold write by A. G. Massey. This book was released on 2017-01-31. The Chemistry of Copper, Silver and Gold available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Chemistry of Copper, Silver and Gold deals with the chemistry of copper, silver, and gold and covers topics ranging from the occurrence and metallurgy of copper to copper compounds and compounds containing copper-metal bonds, compounds of silver, and gold alloys. Hydrides and halides, cyanides and oxides, hydroxides and oxyacids, and thiocyanates and selenocyanates are also discussed. This volume is comprised of three chapters and opens with a brief history of copper, along with its occurrence and metallurgy, analysis, and compounds. The next chapter is devoted to silver and its compounds, while the last chapter describes gold, its isotopes and alloys, chemistry, and gold hydrides and halides, cyanides and oxides, hydroxides and oxyacids. Gold sulfides, selenides and tellurides, and nitrates are also considered, along with nitrides, azides, phosphides, and arsenides; and thiosulfates, selenates, selenites, thiocyanates, and selenocyanates. The final sections look at gold complexes and the organometallic and analytical chemistry of gold. This book will be a valuable source of information for inorganic chemists.

This book was released on 2015. Modeling Chemistry of Copper-based Oxygen Carriers in Chemical Looping Combustion Systems available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Development of a model that can be used to predict oxidation rates of copper to cuprous and cupric oxide (Cu2O and CuO, respectively) in the air reactor of a Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) system is the primary focus of this thesis. The proposed oxidation model, which is based in Wagner Theory and defect chemistry, describes the fundamental processes occurring during copper oxidation. Consequently, it provides better predictive capabilities over a wide range of temperatures and pressures, as well as characteristic particle geometries (spheres, cylinders and plates) than the phenomenological models that are currently being used to predict oxidation rates of copper-based oxygen carriers used in CLC systems. In addition to developing this oxidation model, cuprous and cupric oxide reduction experiments with gaseous fuels like carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane, and solid fuels like char, wyodak coal, and corn stover, were performed to characterize reaction rates in the fuel reactor of CLC systems. Oxidation rates obtained from the oxidation model, and measured rates from the reduction experiments were used to estimate the size and oxygen carrier loading for a 10 MWth CLC system.

Chemical Reaction of Atomic Oxygen with Evaporated Films of Copper available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Evaporated copper films were exposed to an atomic oxygen flux of 1.4 x 10(exp 17) atoms/sq cm per sec at temperatures in the range 285 to 375 F (140 to 191 C) for time intervals between 2 and 50 minutes. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) was used to determine the thickness of the oxide layers formed and the ratio of the number of copper to oxygen atoms in the layers. Oxide film thicknesses ranged from 50 to 3000 A (0.005 to 0.3 microns, or equivalently, 5 x 10(exp -9) to 3 x 10(exp -7); it was determined that the primary oxide phase was Cu2O. The growth law was found to be parabolic (L(t) varies as t(exp 1/2)), in which the oxide thickness L(t) increases as the square root of the exposure time t. The analysis of the data is consistent with either of the two parabolic growth laws. (The thin-film parabolic growth law is based on the assumption that the process is diffusion controlled, with the space charge within the growing oxide layer being negligible. The thick-film parabolic growth law is also based on a diffusion controlled process, but space-charge neutrality prevails locally within very thick oxides.) In the absence of a voltage measurement across the growing oxide, a distinction between the two mechanisms cannot be made, nor can growth by the diffusion of neutral atomic oxygen be entirely ruled out. The activation energy for the reaction is on the order of 1.1 eV (1.76 x 10(exp -19) joule, or equivalently, 25.3 kcal/mole). Fromhold, A. T. and Williams, J. R.
