"El aumento poblacional y sus consecuentes necesidades materiales para el desarrollo, imponen progresivamente mayores exigencias de los recursos hídricos y energéticos. Actualmente, el desarrollo de nuevos procesos para tratamiento de aguas residuales se enfoca en la combinación de tecnologías con el objeto de diseñar y construir unidades compactas, económicas y con alta eficiencia de eliminación de contaminantes, así como en la producción de energía renovable a través de los procesos bioquímicos de las bacterias electrogénicas en el proceso de tratamiento de agua residual. Este documento presenta los resultados de la investigación de tesis, para la obtención del grado de Maestra en Ciencias con Especialidad en Sistemas Ambientales; el objetivo fue desarrollar un sistema híbrido para el tratamiento de aguas residuales y producción simultánea de electricidad e hidrógeno, utilizando celdas de combustible microbianas y membranas de intercambio iónico Nafion® 117. A lo largo de esta investigación, se analizaron diferentes alternativas para mejorar la degradación de la materia orgánica en el agua residual y favorecer la generación de electricidad e hidrógeno. Los datos obtenidos permiten identificar las mejores condiciones para que esto suceda. Favoreciendo las fases de acidogénesis y acetogénesis de la degradación anaerobia, a través del control de la temperatura y el pH, se lograron eficiencias de remoción de Demanda Química de Oxígeno superiores al 90% y tasas de generación de electricidad de hasta 58.16 J/mg DQOremovida. Esta investigación representa un avance en materia de generación de energía limpia a partir del tratamiento de aguas residuales, buscando impulsar una nueva fuente energética de bajo costo y de mínimo impacto ambiental que contribuya a lograr tener plantas de tratamiento sostenibles". -- p.i.
