The varied sensory demands of people, especially those who are autistic, have been more widely acknowledged in educational settings in recent years. To improve the educational experience and general well-being of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this study investigates the incorporation of sensory-friendly water features into the architecture of autism-friendly schools. Since water features are known to have therapeutic and relaxing effects, they may be advantageous for autistic students in educational environments. This study offers insights into the possible effects of sensory-friendly water elements on the learning environment for autistic students.

The CWUAAT series of workshops have celebrated a long history of interdisciplinarity, including design disciplines, computer scientists, engineers, architects, ergonomists, ethnographers, ethicists, policymakers, practitioners, and user communities. This reflects the wider increasing realisation over the long duration of the series that design for inclusion is not limited to technology, engineering disciplines, and computer science but instead requires an interdisciplinary approach. The key to this is providing a platform upon which the different disciplines can engage and see each other’s antecedents, methods, and point of view. This proceedings book of the 10th CWUAAT conference presents papers in a variety of topics including Reconciling usability, accessibility, and inclusive design; Designing inclusive assistive and rehabilitation systems; Designing cognitive interaction with emerging technologies; Designing inclusive architecture; Data mining and visualising inclusion; Legislation, standards, and policy in inclusive design; Situational inclusive interfaces; and The historical perspective: 20 years of CWUAAT. CWUAAT has always aimed to be inclusive in the fields that it invites to the workshop. We must include social science, psychologies, anthropologies, economists, politics, governance, and business. This requirement is now energised by imminent new challenges arising from techno-social change. In particular, artificial intelligence, wireless technologies, and the Internet of Things generate a pressing need for more socially integrated projects with operational consequences on individuals in the built environment and at all levels of design and society. Business cases and urgent environmental issues such as sustainability and transportation should now be a focus point for inclusion in an increasingly challenging world. This proceedings book continues the goal of designing for inclusion, as set out by the CWUAAT when it first started.

Inclusion of children with autism in the mainstream school falls under a regulation in Malaysia. However, existing school buildings still lack in providing enabling environment for children with autism. Moreover, current building standards and policies fail to address the wayfinding design requirements of these children in mainstream educational settings. The present research implies that wayfinding performance of children with autism can be improved by providing an appropriate environment design. This research employs both qualitative and quantitative research methods based on environment and behavior studies. Objectives of this study are (1) to identify different architectural elements that impact on the wayfinding of children with autism and able bodied children, (2) to investigate the existing condition of the primary school buildings in Malaysia in terms of inclusive wayfinding design and finally (3) to suggest a model as a set of tools for design practice that would ensure an appropriate and inclusive learning environment for children with autism, in the context of Malaysia. This research is conducted in five stages. First, through a rigorous literature review on autism and architecture for autism, five design aspects for an enabling environment for autism are identified. At the second stage, based on existing knowledge on wayfinding and school design, twenty wayfinding design parameters are developed that are directly related to these design aspects for an enabling environment for autism. In the third stage, three evaluation tools; Wayfinding Design Parameter Rating Scale (WDPRS), Environmental Assessment (EA) and Performance measure for Children (PMC) are developed and methodology is designed. In the fourth stage, previously identified twenty wayfinding design parameters are further evaluated by the teachers and experts for their relevance using WDPRS. Then an empirical study is carried out in both special and inclusive schools to investigate the performance of children (PMC) in the presence of the twenty wayfinding design parameters as environmental assessment (EA). Finally, based on the findings, design model with a set of tools for wayfinding in inclusive educational spaces is developed to aid the architects and designers. The empirical study shows that there is a strong association between wayfinding design parameters and wayfinding performance of children. The experts' recommendations of the wayfinding design parameters show that these twenty wayfinding design parameters are beneficial for all children, with or without autism.
