Doubling Dreams; Transforming Agriculture in Modi's New India available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Agriculture plays the most important role in Indian economy. It is the primary source of livelihood for a majority of Indians and contributes nearly a quarter of the nation's GDP. Even though the plight of farmers-low incomes, ever-increasing debts and suicides-had been at the centre of Indian politics for decades since Independence, the past policies have not had the desired impact. Agriculture continued to be an unresolved impedance to India's growth story. Unfortunately, the policymaking of the past lacked vision and failed to stabilize the farm crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi came up with the vision of doubling farmer income as a tenable solution and long-lasting solution to the challenges. In order to sustain the agro-economy and ensure food security, agricultural growth and farmer's income were both considered equally important. His vision of 'Beej se bazaar tak' (from seed to market) encompassed all the measures that are needed to ensure better incomes for farmers and increase farm productivity. The prime objective of the Modi government has been to double farmer income in the shortest possible time. Doubling Dreams: Transforming Agriculture in Modi's New India covers all the schemes and initiatives undertaken in the five years (2014-2019) by the Modi government to achieve its commitment for giving farmers their much-deserved rewards and recognition. The chapters are based on true accounts of farmers who interacted with the editors and the contributors.

This open access book provides an evidence-based roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring that the growth process is efficient, inclusive, and sustainable, and results in sustained growth of farmers’ incomes. The book, instead of looking for global best practices and evaluating them to assess the possibility of replicating these domestically, looks inward at the best practices and experiences within Indian states, to answer questions such as -- how the agricultural growth process can be speeded up and made more inclusive, and financially viable; are there any best practices that can be studied and replicated to bring about faster growth in agriculture; does the prior hypothesis that rapid agricultural growth can alleviate poverty faster, reduce malnutrition, and augment farmers’ incomes stand? To answer these questions, the book follows four broad threads -- i) Linkage between agricultural performance, poverty and malnutrition; ii) Analysing the historical growth performance of agricultural sector in selected Indian states; iii) Will higher agricultural GDP necessarily result in higher incomes for farmers; iv) Analysing the current agricultural policy environment to evaluate its efficiency and efficacy, and consolidate all analysis to create a roadmap. These are discussed in 12 chapters, which provide a building block for the concluding chapter that presents a roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring growth in farmers’ incomes.

Rapidly changing climate is already affecting the production of food and feed, industrial crops, livestock, and seafood. In developing countries like India, agriculture and allied sectors contribute significantly to the gross domestic product. Therefore, evolving strategies to sustain a stable growth of the farming sector is essential for feeding a growing population and poverty alleviation in the face of global climate change. It is crucial to carry out a comprehensive analysis of different aspects of climate change to effectively combat its negative impacts on food production systems and landscapes and reap its potential benefits in agricultural production. Research findings and recommendations on topics as diverse as climate change impacts, genetic enhancement of crops, options for adaptation to climate change, opportunities and challenges for sustainable food production systems have been compiled in this volume. Capacity building for climate resilient agriculture and agriculture policy and planning is equally important to face future challenges. This book makes a compelling effort to address these major issues arising from climate change from an Indian perspective. The important and often conflicting issues in climate change impacts, adaptations and mitigations strategies are brought in to focus and a critical summary of the state-of-art in climate smart agriculture is presented for teachers, researchers and policy makers engaged with climate change and agriculture in the tropical arid and semi-arid regions of Asia and Africa.

The Modi Factor write by Ugo Tramballi. This book was released on 2018-03-06. India. The Modi Factor available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. When Narendra Modi was elected Prime Minister of India in 2014, he promised to push through key reforms and bring about the massive economic development needed for the “world’s largest democracy” to win its place among global superpowers. With over 1.3 billion citizens, India is soon to become the world’s most populous country, and more than one quarter of the people joining global workforce during the next decade will be Indian. The poorest of the world’s 20 largest economies, India’s potential for catch-up growth is enormous. And so are the limits and contradictions India must overcome for Modi’s vision to gain momentum. What has his government achieved so far? How likely is Modi’s “Minimum government, maximum governance” strategy to deliver the expected outcomes? Is India, often described as a “reluctant superpower”, now closer to becoming a regional leader? In a crucial year for local elections, and with the Prime Minister ready to run for a second term in 2019, this volume investigates the economic, political and diplomatic trajectories of Modi’s India in its quest for a global role.
