La gestión de los residuos electrónicos es un problema creciente a nivel mundial, ya que el modelo de producción y consumo de aparatos electrónicos en general, y de ordenadores en particular, no es sostenible en la actualidad debido en gran parte a la linealidad de su proceso productivo. Los valiosos recursos que se usan para su fabricación se desperdician tras el fin del corto ciclo de vida útil en los modelos de producción lineal, y la adopción de prácticas de Economía Circular se plantea como la principal solución para un mejor aprovechamiento de los recursos y frenar el ritmo de crecimiento de esta clase de residuos. En este trabajo se analizará concretamente qué se considera un residuo electrónico y, cómo la adopción de medidas de economía circular puede mejorar la gestión de los recursos utilizados en la fabricación de ordenadores personales, distinguiendo entre los ordenadores portátiles y de sobremesa, asimismo se valorará el grado de circularidad de los procesos productivos de estos equipos haciendo uso de índices de circularidad propuestos por la Fundación Ellen MacArthur. Con los índices de circularidad se pueden concretar las áreas fundamentales para mejorar la circularidad del proceso, compararlo con procesos de otros sectores, y realizar propuestas e iniciativas que logren minimizar el impacto ambiental en su fabricación, sobre todo dada la escasez y dificultad en concreto de la obtención de sus valiosos componentes. Como resultado observamos que el índice de circularidad es un 6,1% superior en los portátiles respecto a los sobremesa, aunque en ambos casos presenta un valor bajo que los acerca a un modelo más lineal que circular, lo que implica que aún existe margen para mejorar la circularidad del proceso.
