Emerging Communications for Wireless Sensor Networks available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Wireless sensor networks are deployed in a rapidly increasing number of fields, with uses ranging from healthcare monitoring to industrial and environmental safety, along with new ubiquitous computing devices that are becoming ever more pervasive in our interconnected society. A wireless sensor network is a group of specialized transducers with a communications infrastructure for monitoring and recording conditions at diverse locations. Commonly monitored parameters are temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction and speed, illumination intensity, vibration intensity, sound intensity, power-line voltage, chemical concentrations, pollutant levels and vital body functions. A sensor network consists of multiple detection stations called sensor nodes, each of which is small, lightweight and portable. Every sensor node is equipped with a transducer, microcomputer, transceiver and power source. The transducer generates electrical signals based on sensed physical effects and phenomena. The microcomputer processes and stores the sensor output. The transceiver receives commands from a central computer and transmits data to that computer. The power for each sensor node is derived from a battery.Emerging Communications for Wireless Sensor Networks presents an assortment of exciting progresses in software communication technologies with some novel applications, such as in high altitude systems, ground heat exchangers and body sensor networks. The text discloses up-to-date findings in the spirit of exchanging information and stimulating discussion in the wireless sensor networks community worldwide.

This book was released on 2010-11-30. Emerging Technologies in Wireless Ad-hoc Networks: Applications and Future Development available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Mobile ad-hoc networks have attracted considerable attention and interest from the commercial sector as well as the standards community. Many new ad-hoc networking applications have been conceived to help enable new commercial and personal communication beyond the domain of tactical networks, including personal area networking, home networking, law enforcement operations, search and rescue operations, commercial and educational applications, and sensor networks. Emerging Technologies in Wireless Ad-hoc Networks: Applications and Future Development provides the rationale, state-of-the-art studies and practical applications, proof-of-concepts, experimental studies, and future development on the use of emerging technologies in wireless ad-hoc networks. In addition, this work explores emerging wireless ad hoc technologies based on communication coverage areas: body sensor networks, personal area networks, local area networks, and metropolitan area networks and their applications in critical sectors, for example, agriculture, environment, public health and public transportation.

Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, communication takes place with the help of spatially distributedautonomoussensornodesequippedtosensespeci?cinformation. WSNs, especially the ones that have gained much popularity in the recent years, are, ty- cally, ad hoc in nature and they inherit many characteristics/features of wireless ad hoc networks such as the ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning, and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-con?gure without the involvement of a centralized network manager, router, access point, or a switch. These features help to set up WSNs fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a ?xed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief - erations. WSNs ?nd a variety of applications in both the military and the civilian population worldwide such as in cases of enemy intrusion in the battle?eld, object tracking, habitat monitoring, patient monitoring, ?re detection, and so on. Even though sensor networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to coverage and deployment, scalability, quality-of-service, size, computational power, energy ef?ciency, and security.
