This book was released on 2009-02. Español en Estados Unidos y Otros Contextos de Contacto. Sociolingüística, Ideología y Pedagogía available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Consistent with sociolinguists' growing interest in ecological approaches to the study of language phenomena, this volume accords special attention to the influence of cultural, historical, social and political contexts. The first section focuses on language contact, including contact between Spanish and other languages, as well as among multiple varieties of Spanish. The second section consists of research on language ideologies, especially ideologies regarding Spanish in the United States. The chapters in the final section offer distinct legal, political and critical perspectives on bilingual education and Spanish teaching in the United States.

Delving into the uneasy relationship between English and Spanish in the United States of America, this book approaches specific topics from a variety of perspectives, ranging from the more cultural to the more linguistic. The contributions explore the problems arising in Puerto Rico as a consequence of the unique political status of the island; the linguistic peculiarities of codeswitching, and its use in legal and medical contexts where interpreting is necessary and in educational contexts with heritage language students; the (non)use and the ideological implications of translation in colonial museums; the connections between language, ethnicity and gender identities in the South West; and the role played by the Hispanic press in promoting intercultural dialogue in the New York City area. Engaging with previous publications, the book examines these topics from an interdisciplinary standpoint, offers new insights into the problems of this cultural and linguistic contact, and suggests new areas of research. This book was originally published as a special issue of Language and Intercultural Communication.

Language Contact and Change in Mesoamerica and Beyond available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Language-contact phenomena in Mesoamerica and adjacent regions present an exciting field for research that has the potential to significantly contribute to our understanding of language contact and the role that it plays in language change. This volume presents and analyzes fresh empirical data from living and/or extinct Mesoamerican languages (from the Mayan, Uto-Aztecan, Totonac-Tepehuan and Otomanguean groups), neighboring non-Mesoamerican languages (Apachean, Arawakan, Andean languages), as well as Spanish. Language-contact effects in these diverse languages and language groups are typically analyzed by different subfields of linguistics that do not necessarily interact with one another. It is hoped that this volume, which contains works from different scholarly traditions that represent a variety of approaches to the study of language contact, will contribute to the lessening of this compartmentalization. The volume is relevant to researchers of language contact and contact-induced change and to anyone interested both in the historical development and present features of indigenous languages of the Americas and Latin American Spanish.

Spanish in Colombia and New York City available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume fills a void in language variation and change research. It is the first to provide an empirical, comparative study of Spanish in Colombia and New York City. Remarkable similarities in the linguistic conditioning on language variation in both communities contrast with interesting differences in the effects of social predictors. The book provides a window into the effects of language and dialect contact on change and serves as a model for studies comparing diasporic populations to their home speech communities.
