Excerpt from Formal Authority Versus Power in Profit Maximizing Organizations I consider a setup in which the firm generally wishes to follow the wishes of individuals (or groups) with large amounts of specific human capital even if their willingness to pay for decisions is less than that of others. Thus, these individuals have power over decisions. In a situation where costly communication prevents the owner of the firm from knowing the valuations employees attach to all decisions, the owner will give formal authority to one individual (or group). I show that, as long as individuals have the possibility of protesting against decisions they do not like, it may be profit maximizing to give this formal authority to someone other than the powerful individual. The reason is that the threat of formal protests by powerful individuals is more effective as a check on the discretion of the person endowed with formal authority. Power in Pro¿t Maximizing Organizations (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from Power in Pro t Maximizing Organizations This has two implications. First, individuals who expect to stay at t+ 1 with higher probability are, all else equal, willing to pay more for the right to have decisions made according to their wishes. Thus, even if the firm were just trying to mimic the outcome that would prevail with an auction they would let these individuals have a large say. Second, and more importantly for my purposes, the firm will benefit by implementing the wishes of those employees that it wants to retain with high probability, even if these are not necessarily the employees who are willing to pay the most. The reason is that, by following these individuals' wishes, the firm raises the probability that they will stay in order to collect what amounts to a form of deferred compensation. The motivation for giving in uence to this subset of employees would vanish if the firm could write complete contracts that specify future wage compensation in all states of the world. But, as long as it is not possible to specify future wages in this fashion, the firm may benefit from giving in uence to employees it wants to keep, even if others are willing to pay more. Synthesizes the empirical literature on organizationalstructuring to answer the question of how organizations structure themselves --how they resolve needed coordination and division of labor. Organizationalstructuring is defined as the sum total of the ways in which an organizationdivides and coordinates its labor into distinct tasks. Further analysis of theresearch literature is neededin order to builda conceptualframework that will fill in the significant gap left by not connecting adescription of structure to its context: how an organization actuallyfunctions. The results of the synthesis are five basic configurations (the SimpleStructure, the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy, theDivisionalized Form, and the Adhocracy) that serve as the fundamental elementsof structure in an organization. Five basic parts of the contemporaryorganization (the operating core, the strategic apex, the middle line, thetechnostructure, and the support staff), and five theories of how it functions(i.e., as a system characterized by formal authority, regulated flows, informalcommunication, work constellations, and ad hoc decision processes) aretheorized. Organizations function in complex and varying ways, due to differing flows -including flows of authority, work material, information, and decisionprocesses. These flows depend on the age, size, and environment of theorganization; additionally, technology plays a key role because of itsimportance in structuring the operating core. Finally, design parameters aredescribed - based on the above five basic parts and five theories - that areused as a means of coordination and division of labor in designingorganizational structures, in order to establish stable patterns of behavior.(CJC).
