Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Introduction to Greek Prose Composition available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from Introduction to Greek Prose Composition: With Exercises In composing in any language, the various difficulties to be surmounted may be summed up in three classes - Accidence, Syntax, and Idiom. The Accidence is the first step, and must be learnt from the grammar. These Exercises will perhaps be of use to practise the learner in the cases and inflexions, but a fair acquaintance with them is presumed before starting to write Greek Prose at all The Syntax must also in the main be learned from the grammar; but as the grammar is intended primarily for other purposes than to assist in composition, it has been thought advisable to give here some notes on Greek constructions, arranged so that the learner may readily refer to them, and find what be is likely to want more easily than he could in a grammar. Some hints on Idiom, also, have been given here, so as to guide the student in those places where he is most likely to go wrong, and to suggest to him, without going too much into detail, some ideas on the leading differences between the methods of expression adopted respectively in the English and Greek languages. Excerpt from Materials and Models for Greek Prose Composition The present work differs from preceding collections of the kind in two respects. First, the passages are arranged according to style and subject-matter for convenience of reference. Secondly, to each English piece, except in the Miscellaneous part, references are appended to analogous or similar passages in classical authors of approved merit, with the object of furnishing a model to the student in his attempt to render them into Greek or Latin. As the selections are mainly taken from standard English authors, and are not translations, the student must not expect to find the same thoughts occurring in the same sequence, or similarly expressed, in the passages to which he is referred; but in all cases there will be found some analogy, by comparison or contrast, in the subject, circumstances, or spirit of the parallel passages, sufficient to furnish hints for the treatment of the piece to be turned, and to suggest the style to be adopted in turning it. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition: For Use in Colleges In the following exercises, which are intended for use in college classes, it is assumed that the student has had some practice in turning connected English sentences into Greek, and that he is therefore familiar with the ordinary forms of inflection. No attempt has been made to indicate which exercises are intended for any particular year: as the conditions to be met are not everywhere the same, this has been left to the judgment of those in charge of the instruction. For the ordinary course one hundred and twenty exercises have been given: to these have been added thirteen (Nos. 121-133) for those who desire to have material for practice in the imitation of Demosthenes, and twelve for those who would have similar material for translation in the style of Plato. These twenty-five exercises may, of course, be used by those who do not aim at definite imitation of any particular author. The introduction does not seek to take the place of the grammar, or to be at all a full exposition of its principles. In the notes there given differences between the two idioms are considered from the point of view of one who is attempting to translate from English into Greek. The vocabulary gives all the words that the student needs in writing these exercises. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
