Download and read online ebook Root and Tuber Crops write by J.E. Bradshaw. This book was released on 2010-09-11. Root and Tuber Crops available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. It is important to include Tuber and Root Crops in the Handbook of Plant Breeding. They include starchy staple crops that are of increasing importance for global food security and relief of poverty, important millennium goals for the United Nations. Indeed, 2008 was the UN International Year of the Potato in recognition of this role of the potato as the world’s third most important food crop after wheat and rice. The other major staples are cassava, sweetpotato and yam. Together they occupy about 50 million hectares, with production at 640 million metric tons, of which 70% is in developing countries. In total there are more than 30 species of Root and Tuber Crops grown in the world today. Given the content of other volumes in the series, it makes sense to include sugar and fodder beets; swedes and turnips; and minor root and tuber crops so that the book series is as complete as possible. Like the other volumes in the series, this one will present information on the latest in applied plant breeding using the current advances in the field, from an efficient use of genetic resources to the impact of biotechnology in plant breeding. Seven crop specific chapters are proposed, together with an introduction to this diverse set of plant species. Outstanding scientists for each crop species are proposed as senior authors, who may invite co-authors to contribute part of a chapter. In order to increase the overall acceptance of the volume, balance will be sought with authors from different research groups/countries who will be asked to contribute and collaborate where appropriate. The book should be of interest to researchers in both academic and industrial settings, and in both developed and developing countries, as well as students and teachers of plant breeding. It is currently extremely important to educate and train a new generation of plant breeders given the challenges faced by humankind in producing more food for an expanding global population during a period of environmental (including climate) change.

Download and read online ebook Plant Clinic Handbook write by J. M. Waller. This book was released on 1998. Plant Clinic Handbook available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Since its creation in 1920, The International Mycological Institute has been concerned with the identification of plant-pathogenic fungi and bacteria. Part of its role has been the development of plant clinics, which have an important role in providing access for farmers and extension workers to specialist scientific services for the diagnosis of plant disease problems and advice on control measures. Clinics can also be bases from which surveys of crop problems are made and data on the needs of farmers are assimilated, in order to identify research priorities. This practical handbook provides information on all aspects of the technical procedures, material requirements and organization for the effective operation of a plant clinic. It describes the diagnostic process, from field observation and collection through to methods of culture, microscopy, keeping records and reference material, general laboratory practice and equipment maintainance. The procedures described have been used successfully at IMI for many years, and through a series of training programs, have been transferred to laboratories in many other countries. Essential reading for those involved in setting up and running plant clinics and plant quarantine facilities, this handbook will also be of interest to all practitioners and advanced students of plant pathology, particularly those concerned with diagnostics, and to crop protection specialists working in an advisory capacity.

Plant Pathology and Plant Diseases available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of plant diseases, including pathogens, plant-pathogen interactions, their management, and future perspectives. Plant diseases limit potential crop production and are responsible for considerable losses in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Our global food production systems are under increasing pressure from global trade, climate change and urbanization. If we could alleviate the losses due to plant diseases, we would be able to produce roughly 20% more food - enough to feed the predicted world population in 2050. Co-authored by a group of international teachers of plant pathology who have collaborated for many years, the book gives expert and seamless coverage. Plant Pathology and Plant Diseases: Addresses major advances in plant-pathogen interactions, classification of plant pathogens, and the methods of managing or controlling disease Is relevant for a global audience; it covers many examples of diseases with an impact worldwide but with an emphasis on disease of particular importance in a temperate context Features over 400 striking figures and colour photographs It is suitable for graduate students and advanced undergraduates studying plant pathology, biology, agriculture and horticulture.
