Download and read online ebook A Special Hell write by Claudia Malacrida. This book was released on 2015-01-01. A Special Hell available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Using rare interviews with former inmates and workers, institutional documentation, and governmental archives, Claudia Malacrida illuminates the dark history of the treatment of “mentally defective” children and adults in twentieth-century Alberta. Focusing on the Michener Centre in Red Deer, one of the last such facilities operating in Canada,A Special Hell is a sobering account of the connection between institutionalization and eugenics. Malacrida explains how isolating the Michener Centre's residents from their communities served as a form of passive eugenics that complemented the active eugenics program of the Alberta Eugenics Board. Instead of receiving an education, inmates worked for little or no pay – sometimes in homes and businesses in Red Deer – under the guise of vocational rehabilitation. The success of this model resulted in huge institutional growth, chronic crowding, and terrible living conditions that included both routine and extraordinary abuse. Combining the powerful testimony of survivors with a detailed analysis of the institutional impulses at work at the Michener Centre,A Special Hell is essential reading for those interested in the disturbing past and troubling future of the institutional treatment of people with disabilities.

This book was released on 2019-04-08. Toilet Warrior available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. During a business trip to India, the author made an unexpected discovery, a discovery that was to turn his understanding of our world upside down. He was so shaken by what he learned that he felt unable to simply walk away. More often than not, when people are confronted by a major issue with global implications you will hear them say “What can I do? I’m only one person.” Mark decided that such a response would be unacceptable and he made up his mind to get involved. Rather than just sit on the sidelines, in 2014 Mark took decisive action. As a result, Mark’s inner humanitarian was awakened and the lives of tens of thousands of underprivileged children in India have been changed for the better. This highly inspiring, witty, cleverly narrated book tells the story of that awakening and its impact. “I hope that the readers will enjoy reading this real story, a story of how one man can change society” - Sushil Gupta, President Nominee, Rotary International “I hope this book can motivate more people to find purpose and meaning in their lives” - Jack “Mr Toilet” Sim, Founder, World Toilet Organization When you buy this book, you are directly contributing funds to projects that will change the lives of some of the most underprivileged people in the world. www.operationtoilets.org.au

Hell's Portal Gutter Punks of New Orleans available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Let me take you on this wild ride of my younger years hanging around true anarchists called Gutter Punks or Train Kids as they like to be called in this current day. I will break down to the reader how the whole Gutter Punk persuasion started in New Orleans and all the different tactics and rules one must abide by to chill with these rebellious people. These nomads usually hop trains to different major cities and always end up, for some reason or another, in New Orleans. Surprisingly, you'd be amazed how many Gutter Punks I've met that come from rich, well-to-do families. Guessing that this is not the route they wanted to take in life, sadly, a lot of them end up with ominous ambitions as their goals--not all of them, though. Almost every story in this book takes place in New Orleans, and all legal names of characters have been changed as stated on the cover. The only names that haven't been changed are the street names for certain Gutter Punks. City street names haven't been changed either. I am a sober man today, and as I sat here in a long-term rehab thinking about my past, I asked myself, "What are you going to do with all these crazy, action-packed, macabre tales you've experienced over the years? I know! Tell the world how much fun you had. Also, let them know how much karma can catch up with you for all the atrocious actions you've taken hanging out with today's modern Pirate. Maybe it will open up the eyes of the public on how our fellow brothers or sisters got into the predicament they did. What does not come out in the wash will definitely come out in the rinse." 70 70
