Gao uses the case of conference interpreting at the Summer Davos Forum in China to systematically reveal the ways in which ideology and linguistic ‘re-engineering’ can lead to discourse reconstruction. Translation and interpreting can never be wholly neutral practices in ‘multi-voiced’ transnational communication. Gao employs an innovative methodological synthesis to examine in depth a range of elements surrounding interpreters’ ideological positioning. These include analysing the appraisal patterns of the source and target texts, identifying ‘us’-and-‘them’ discourse structures, investigating interpreters’ cognitions, and examining the crossmodal means by which interpreters render paralanguage. Collectively, they bridge the gap between socio-political and ideological concerns on the one hand, and practical questions of discourse reconstruction in cross-language/ cultural events on the other, offering a panoramic perspective. An invaluable read for scholars in translation and interpreting studies, particularly those with an interest in political discourse or the international relations context.

Today's worldwide ideological tensions have captured the interest of such varied disciplines as political science, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies and linguistics. There are two primary reasons why translation studies cannot ignore the ideological debate. Historically, translation has always been a site for ideological clashes. In addition, globalization is now setting off translational mechanisms even within monolingual artifacts, and this calls for the expertise of translation scholars. Apropos of Ideology aims to contribute to the broader discussion of ideology by providing a forum for debating ideological issues in translation as well as by bringing together, within the pages of a single volume, different types of translation research, informed by very different research ideologies. Adopting a wide definition of ideology as a set of ideas, beliefs and codes of behaviour that "govern a community by virtue of being regarded as the norm", a number of translation scholars look into ideological phenomena as they impinge on the process of translation. They consider questions of politics, but also reflect upon gender, sexuality, religion, secularity, technology and even the very discipline of translation studies. At the same time, the volume displays the kaleidoscopic complexity of the discipline while providing a strong argument that such diversity of perspectives is highly desirable. Contributors include Maria Tymoczko, Rosemary Arrojo, Christiane Nord, Keith Harvey, Peter Fawcett, Ma Carmen Africa Vidal, Christina Schäffner, David Katan, Francesco Straniero-Sergio, and Sehnaz Tahir.

Revisiting the Interpreter’s Role available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Through the development of a valid and reliable instrument, this book sets out to study the role that interpreters play in the various settings where they work, i.e. the courts, the hospitals, business meetings, international conferences, and schools. It presents interpreters’ perceptions and beliefs about their work as well as statements of their behaviors about their practice. For the first time, the administration and results of a survey administered across languages in Canada, Mexico and the United States offer the reader a glimpse of the interpreters' views in their own words. It also discusses the tension between professional ideology and the reality of interpreters at work. This book has implications for the theory and practice of interpreting across settings.
