The American Cardiovascular Pandemic available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. As Americans and citizens of other industrializing countries began to enjoy lives of increasing affluence and ease during the first half of the 20th century, a rising tide of heart attacks and strokes displaced infectious diseases as the leading cause of death, killing millions in the United States and throughout the world. Although cardiovascular disease remains serious and widespread, the significant decline of per capita deaths is one of the greatest accomplishments of modern public health and medicine. Death rates from heart attack and stroke have fallen dramatically by 80% in the past 50 years -- the progress has been hard won by a combination of basic and applied laboratory research, broad and far-reaching epidemiological studies by physicians, scientists, and public health experts. Cardiovascular disease is no longer viewed as an as an inevitable feature of the natural course of aging, and complacency has given way to hope. This book focuses on developments that influenced the rise and decline of cardiovascular mortality since 1900, but also includes insider insights from the author, a 42-year NIH employee.

Medical progress and greater prosperity have helped us to not only live longer, but also to stay healthy longer. However, the downsides of ever greater convenience are now becoming apparent: the next pandemic will be characterised by lifestyle-related diseases and – unlike the coronavirus – will spread slowly and without much media attention. A growing number of circulatory diseases, type 2 diabetes and cancer are part of the new normal, resulting from a modern lifestyle with less exercise and more fast food. An increasing number of mental illnesses due to pressure to perform, loneliness and dependence on digital aids have become part of our daily life. Not only older people are affected but more and more young people also suffer from these symptoms. These "slow pandemics" arise in everyday life and cannot be treated by a hospital stay or a drug. They require a new healthcare system that focuses on daily life – and the involvement of all public and private actors who shape our environment and behaviour. The focus on healthy lifestyles opens up new, interlinked markets for prevention – provided that society also assumes responsibility. The foundations are selective rather than a complete evaluation of behavioural data, and builds health-promoting infrastructure and redefines quality of life by combining control and enjoyment.

Control of Cardiovascular Diseases in Developing Countries available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasing in epidemic proportions in developing countries. CVD already accounts for almost 10 percent of the developing world's burden of disease and is likely to become the developing world's leading cause of death. There is reason for hope, however, given that huge potential exists for applying R&D to control this emerging epidemicâ€"both in creating powerful new interventions such as vaccines and dietary supplements and in guiding behavior. In addition, a considerable body of evidence suggests that current risk-factor prevention programs and low-cost case management of CVD offer feasible, cost-effective ways to reduce CVD mortality and disability in developing country populations. Large-scale CVD control efforts are lacking, however, and thus governments and individuals are left to make choices about health and health care services without the benefit of appropriate knowledge. This report was designed to promote a policy dialogue on CVD based on informed knowledge of R&D opportunities that offer effective, affordable, and widely applicable responses in developing countries. The report examines (a) the emerging burden of CVD in developing countries, (b) the future worldwide burden of CVD, (c) current prevention and treatment of CVD in developing countries, (d) R&D to support CVD control, (e) opportunities and priorities for R&D, and the need for institutional arrangements for collaboration in facing the epidemic.
