China has achieved remarkable economic success in the past three decades and has become the second-largest economy in the world after the United States. However, accompanying this rapid economic growth is an increasing income inequality. In recent years, China's income disparity has reached an alarming level, making it one of the countries with the most unequal income distribution in the world. The widening income gap is the root cause of many issues in contemporary China. How should China step up distribution system reform? How should China deepen the reforms to its fiscal and tax systems? Should the government increase wages to achieve the income multiplication plan? What is the fundamental measure to tackle income disparity issues in China? With in-depth analysis and empirical studies on these questions, this book provides comprehensive perspectives on China's income disparity issues that most international scholars are concerned about.

Discontented Miracle: Growth, Conflict, And Institutional Adaptations In China available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. China has been enjoying stellar economic growth for more than a quarter of a century. Yet the rapid growth amid market-oriented reforms has not been an unalloyed blessing. The “China Miracle” has been accompanied by soaring income inequality and rising social tensions, over-taxing China's resource base and contributing to an environmental crisis. Despite substantial improvement in the standard of living and other social indicators, China's leaders have, in the aftermath of the Tiananmen crackdown, steadfastly held back the opening up of the political system. In this volume, contributors from the disciplines of economics, political science, and sociology examine how existing institutions, broadly defined, might have exacerbated tensions in China's evolving economy, society and polity as well as how institutional developments have been introduced to deal with existing or emerging conflicts and tensions.

Development and Underlying Drivers available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to shed light to the various characteristics and sources of income inequality in China and thereby demonstrate their interrelations on economic growth using a literature review approach and by examining the impact of differences in the propensity to save among various Chinese income groups. In the course of this, China’s current degree of income inequality is established, while identifying various forces and drivers behind these changes since the economic opening process initiated in 1978. Since adoption of the open-market policy reforms in 1978, China has experienced rapid economic growth. At the same time, its level of income inequality turned from one of the world's most equal to one of the most unequal. During long periods of time China was the country that experienced the fastest increase in income inequality. This bags the question whether income inequality is in fact the causal reason for economic growth or the necessary outcome of it. In the wake of this, income inequality in China has developed into several dimensions of inequality drivers ranging from an extensive urban-rural inequality, cross-regional inequality, inequality of education or wealth inequalities.
