The first, dated 22 March 1792, is signed by Phillips, Jarvis and Read. On behalf of the Committee for the Sale of the Eastern Lands belonging to the Commonwealth (presumably of Massachusetts), they agree to sell Jackson and his associate [Royal] Flint lands which lie between borders they outline. Also outline the price and terms of the deal. The second letter, dated 23 March 1792, is from Jackson to the Committee. He asks for an extension of fifteen days to complete the transaction, in order to make arrangements with other business partners. The third letter, signed by Phillips, Jarvis and Read and dated 23 March 1792, agree to Jackson's request. Docketed by Henry Knox.

Writes that [y]ou will please to proceed to Frenchmans Bay and with Mr. Nathan Jones endeavor to effect the purchase on my Acct. agreeable to the Inclosed Instructions directed to Mr. P. Bruce, Mr. Nathan Jones and yourself - Goes on to say that the land must be looked after. Would like them to let him know any information they might have. Second part written in Trenton, New Jersey to Nathan Jones and Phineas Bruce. Dated 19 October 1791. Asks them to help him with some business in purchasing land. Third part written in Boston, Massachusetts. Dated 12 March 1792. Mentions that Trescott, Jones and Bruce are joined in the written Instructions as also in the purchase of the Farm in No S as mentioned in my Letter ... Fourth part written in the same place and on the same date as the third. States that I do hereby authorize and impower you to purchase of Col. Nathan Jones of Gouldsborough a Tract of Land in Trenton Frenchmans Bay, the said Tract contains about seven or eight thousand acres and lies West on Union River and East on Jordan River is the same Land Deeded him ... Goes on to discuss how he went about finding the land and purchasing it. Includes a post script. Watermarked L Paine and with a hunting horn inside a crest.

In the first correspondence, dated 12 September 1792, Duer writes to Jackson and Flint discussing a contract he drew up for Knox involving land deals between Knox, Roche and Leval. The second letter, dated 13 September 1792, Flint forwards a packet (not included) to Jackson which was originally between Knox and Duer. The packet includes an agreement that Knox , Duer, Leval and Roche. Believes the arrangement will prove of utility in rendering our speculation in Eastern Land a profitable operation. Trusts that Jackson will use his influence with the Committee to approve and finalize the agreement. Lists the remaining items that are included in the packet and notes the mortgages that Leval needs to give to Jackson. In third document, dated 13 September 1792, Flint writes to Jackson regarding an agreement between Leval and Duer. Specifies which sections of land need to be sold to Leval and notes the mortgage and bonds for all of the lands that will be given to Jackson. Instructs Jackson requests from the Committee that they give them a title to one or more townships whenever they pay double the original price contracted. The fourth document lists out Leval's propositions regarding her land deal with Duer and Knox, along with Duer's answers to Leval's propositions. The bottom section includes a section from Knox authorizing Duer to empower Jackson and Flint to draw up a new contract according to the new provisions listed by Leval and Duer. Includes a notary, dated 6 September 1792, by John Reese certifying that the writing produced by William Duer is a true copy. The last document, signed by Flint and Jackson on 12 September 1792, is a contract between the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Leval and Roche for the immediate settlement of lands. Leval and Roche agree to purchase 300,000 acres of land for the purpose of settling at 20 cents per acre plus interest. The above sum of 20 cents per acre, one moiety, will then be credited to the two last installments due to Messrs Jackson and Flint.

The letters were written on 14 and 19 October 1791, and the paper is undated. Jackson signs twice, once after each letter. The first letter is from Jackson to Nathan Jones. Jackson reports that Madame de la Val and Mr. de la Roche will ask for necessary supplies for their people settled at Trenton, District of Maine. Asks Jones to buy the supplies on his own [Jackson's] account and to make triplicate receipts. Instructs Jones to retain one and send the other two from time to time. Also asks him to get the supplies at cash price, noting, perfect regularity and system are necessary in the progress of this business... The second letter is from Jackson to Nathan Jones and Phineas Bruce. Provides instructions for his business affairs concerning purchasing land lots. Instructs them to assist Mr. John Peters in quieting the Settlers on Monsieur De Gregoire's Grant. Jackson also wants those settlers to sign deeds. Page four is a copy of a paper received from Mr. de la Roche (to Jackson). Mentions the need to get the French settlers an incorporation from Massachusetts. De la Roche knows that Trenton is already incorporated, but says the issue should be revisited since the 17 American families there will be greatly outnumbered by French immigrants.
