Too long restricted to children's storybooks and cinematic extravaganzas, the Torah -- comprising the first five books of the Bible -- is an underappreciated mother lode of divine instruction, vitally important for Christians and the church. Convinced that both those who take the Torah too literally and those who neglect it are guilty of a naïve simplicity, Johanna van Wijk-Bos presents guidelines to help ordinary Christians recover this treasure in their faith and practice. Having lived in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation, van Wijk-Bos recognizes that after the attempted annihilation of the Jews from Christian Europe, it cannot be business as usual for Christianity. In light of the Holocaust, Christians must commit themselves to the restoration of just relations between Christians and Jews. This commitment to address all that fractures human relations undergirds van Wijk-Bos's call for Christians to reengage the Torah. Making Wise the Simple points out how God's care for and engagement with the whole world in the Torah set the tone for the entire biblical story. The book pays special attention to how our treatment of strangers lies at the heart of the Torah's teaching. Without attempting a purely Jewish reading of the Torah, van Wijk-Bos reclaims the Torah as a vibrant word for the Christian community in covenant with God. Written in a personal style conversant with current scholarship but sprinkled with anecdotes, this book is for everyone who has a hunger and enthusiasm for what the biblical text may convey, the courage to ask disturbing questions of the text, and an openness to old words that may bring forth new things, perhaps even making one wise.

From the author: I believe imagination is a great gift from our Creator. Using it, several years ago, I began to explore a question that captivated me: How can I inspire my granddaughter even if she lives two thousand miles away? I started emailing her a few hope-inspiring thoughts. With encouragement from my wife Susie, soon I had sent some 50 messages and contemplated starting a daily blog for my Words of Hope. Why? Because they seemed to have a real impact on the lives they touched as I continued to expand my audience. I've written over 600 Words of Hope and am excited to place many of these into book form that I hope will inspire you. In life, there is a drive, there is rhythm, and there is space. I believe most Americans are working too long and hard under too much pressure. Taking pride in our work is needful, but we don't have the right rhythm because we don't create space for rest. People often say, "I'm too busy and don't have enough time." I'm there with you. My wife Susie says, "Fred, slow down the bus," meaning I need to have peaceful, reflective time. Words of Hope slows down your bus and allows you to focus on what is vital. How do I want to live? How do I want to spend my time? By developing a daily habit of reading Words of Hope, you can quiet life's pace and generate reflective space that will increase your energy and joy

This book was released on 2023-06. YAHWEH'S Word available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. THIRD EDITION--When the Apostle Paul, who refers to himself as a Hebrew of Hebrews, writes in 2 Timothy 3:16 that "Every Scripture is Yahweh-breathed", he is making a reference to the original Hebrew Scriptures commonly referred to by most Christians as the Old Testament. Those original inspired Hebrew Scriptures were primarily written in Hebrew with small portions written in Aramaic and included God's proper name, over 6000 times. The transliteration of God's proper name, known as the Tetragrammaton, is YHWH and by a majority consensus is pronounced Yahweh. Yahweh's name is used more than 1000 times in connection with the communication of His Word and over 600 times by the inspired writers of the Psalms. A reading of the Psalms, in any translation where the name Yahweh is used, will confirm the importance of "The Name" and an attitude that all who claim Yahweh as their God should demonstrate in their personal relationship and communication with Him. Since the new millennium began, there have been several Bible translations that have restored the name Yahweh to the Old Testament Scriptures. Leading the way in this new trend is the "World English Bible" first published in 1997 and last updated in September of 2016. Using the "World English Bible" as its translation foundation, "Yahweh's Word" has taken this trend one step farther and has also restored Yahweh's name to the New Testament. The New Testament often records Jesus and his apostles quoting from the Old Testament Scriptures. One can easily assume Jesus, the only begotten Son of Yahweh, would have quoted verbatim from the original Hebrew Scriptures. In "Yahweh's Word", Old Testament references and quotes found in the New Testament have been edited, where possible, to be more consistent with the Old Testament Scriptures. This, in turn, causes the name Yahweh to be read within the text of the New Testament in the same context as it appears in the Old Testament. In the Second Edition of "Yahweh's Word", the name Yahweh was restored an additional 1200 plus times in the New Testament. The proper name, Yahweh, replaces titles like "God" and "the Lord" as well as pronouns "he" and "his" when they are referring to Yahweh. The Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB) was used as the primary resource for making this improvement. The Third Edition of "Yahweh's Word", has a greater emphasis placed on the "Way of Yahweh" which is sometimes referred to simply as "the Way". Matthew 3:1-3 refers to John the Baptizer as he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one who calls, Prepare the Way of Yahweh in the wilderness! Make a level highway in the desert for our God." In Acts 9:1-2, Paul was on his way to Damascus looking for any who were of the Way. Later, after his conversion, in Acts 24:14-15, Paul states, "But this I confess to you, that after the Way, . . . so, I serve the God of our fathers, . . . having a hope toward Yahweh, . . .." The reader of "Yahweh's Word" will see the connection between the Old Testament Scriptures and the New Testament Scriptures from a clear and more accurate perspective.
