"An investigation has been made of some of the problems associated with abort from landing and return to an orbiting vehicle in a 50-mile lunar orbit. For this study the landing module was considered capable of direct return to the orbiting vehicle from a hovering position at the lunar surface. The investigation was divided into two parts, an analytical study and a simulation study. The results of the analytical study indicate that, for an economical return to the orbiting vehicle, the landing maneuver should be chosen such that the orbiting vehicle is almost directly above the landing module at the touchdown point. This requirement places limitations on the angular travel of the landing vehicle around the moon prior to touchdown. Results of the simulation study indicate that a pilot can control the abort maneuver by using visual information."--Summary.

If you have an interest in the technology and theory of space travel, in the basic elements of astronomy to be understood as fundamental to travel in space, in a sufficient knowledge of the subject of physics required to understand the technical aspects of space travel, you will be interested in this book. It is written with the idea in mind that even if you find some parts difficult, you can continue on and still understand the theory involved in the achievement that was the moon landing and departure. You will be amazed at the immensity of the Saturn rocket that launched the Apollo crew into space. By the time you have progressed to the actual lift-off of Apollo from earth, you will understand rocket propulsion and trajectory in space, lofting requirements to place satellites in orbit, and the timing of the elliptical path of the moon in its orbit about earth. More importantly, you will be able to make all of the calculations required to do and to understand all of these maneuvers. The book also includes a chapter on The Basic Computer Language, which requires that the reader have access to BASIC computer software, named BASIC, BASICA, or QBASIC. This is not required in order to understand most of the theory of space travel, but the reader is advised that some understanding of the BASIC computer language is to his advantage.
