This book was released on 2007-01-11. Ethnicity, Race, and Health in Multicultural Societies:Foundations for better epidemiology, public health, and health care available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Most of the industrialized world now comprises of multi-ethnic societies, with people from widely varying ancestry, cultures, languages, and beliefs. With globalization of trade, increasing international travel, and migration, the whole world is destined to become multi-ethnic within the next 20 or 30 years. This poses huge challenges for doctors, nurses, public health practitioners, health care managers, and policy makers who have to meet legal and policy obligations to deliverhealth outcomes, and provide health care of equal quality and effectiveness. To achieve this, they need a solid understanding of the underlying concepts of race and ethnicity, and how these are applied to achieve better health for ethnic minority populations. They also need to have an awareness of themisuses of these concepts, particularly taking into account the history of racism that permeates many societies to this day.Written in non-technical language, with all terminology explained and defined, this book provides an accessible introduction to these complex issues. The key concepts of race and ethnicity are explained, including their uses and misuses. The strengths and weaknesses of these concepts in terms of epidemiology, policy making, health service planning, research, health care, and health promotion are illustrated. The book emphasises theory, ideas, and principles, and and its aims are to helpcounteract the unethical and atheoretical methods often used to study ethnicity. Practical application of the theory is demonstrated through the use of extensive examples. The conceptual frameworks of ethnicity and race required by practitioners and researchers are slightly different, including the natureof research questions, the relative value of various methods of classification, and the approach to data analysis, presentation, and interpretation, and these differences are made explicit. Overall, the interdependence of theory and practice is demonstrated, making this and ideal foundation text or refresher for those involved in race and ethnicity from a health care perspective.

Download and read online ebook The Ethnicity Reader write by Montserrat Guibernau. This book was released on 1997-10-29. The Ethnicity Reader available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Ethnicity Reader offers a comprehensive and challenging selection of readings for students of sociology, politics, international relations and race relations. It presents a highly accessible introduction to the study of ethnicity by providing an original approach to nationalism, multiculturalism and migration. The analysis of the ethnic component present in these three topics distinguishes this reader from others and makes it indispensable to those seeking to understand the relevance of ethnicity as one of the most prominent forces in the modern world. Drawing on a wide range of examples, the selections included examine theories of nationalism and consider issues of ethnic integration and conflict in the USA, Canada, Quebec, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Catalonia among other countries and regions. The reader, however, does not confine itself to the study of nationalism. Many of the selections deal with the role of ethnicity in groups which are not nationalist at all but for which ethnicity is an important factor in the process of migration. The concept of ethnicity is therefore discussed both in relation to group rights in existing nation states and in relation to transnational communities in a globalized world. Contributors include, Anthony D. Smith, John Rex, Eric Hobsbawm, James Clifford, Michael Keating, Franke Wilmer, Benedict Anderson, Will Kymlicka, Etienne Balibar and Michel Wieviorka.
