It is applicable to non-deployable, crash protected voice recorders, ancillary equipment and their installation in civil aircraft. The document defines an improved minimum performance standard. In particular, the qualification tests have been revised to improve crash survival and increased recording durations in excess of 30 minutes are introduced. The use of solid state memory devices as recording media is now considered together with the need to record digital data-link messages that replace traditional voice messages between Air Traffic Control and an aircraft.
