Language Variation and Multimodality in Audiovisual Translation available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Society is characterized by a constant flow of multimodal products, which increasingly blur the lines between screen and reality, and audiovisual translation allows overcoming geographical and linguistic frontiers between small realities across the planet. However, research has long struggled to adapt its methodologies to effectively analyze such phenomena, and even more to scale its results through larger corpus analyses. Dora Renna proposes a pioneering framework, informed by the latest trends in audiovisual translation and multimodality and fit to achieve the complex task of operatively including multimodality in a rigorous corpus analysis of source and target versions of films characterized by language variation as a key element of character design. While language is at the core of her analysis, its role in the broader audiovisual context is explored thanks to a solid network of relations that shed light on linguistic and translational choices as well as on their implications. Framework and methodology are explained in detail and thoroughly applied to the case study to show how this perspective contributes to move a step forward in corpus-based audiovisual translation studies. The results obtained are unexpected and urge readers to overcome old attitudes towards audiovisual translation and multimodal corpora.

Multimodality and Audiovisual Translation available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Multimodality is an increasingly important area in applied linguistics and has begun to play a pivotal role in the act of communication. With the expansion of digital technology, the multimodal approach has also been applied to audiovisual translations with a special emphasis on subtitles. This study was designed to investigate the interplay between verbal and multimodal modes, i.e., semiotic, visual, acoustic, and kinetic, and to determine to what extent this interaction affects film subtitles. It is thus highly significant to assess when it is justifiable for a translator to obviate the original soundtrack in film subtitles when the same message is conveyed with the help of semiotic and multimodal modes other than language. The study also examines the influence of multimodal modes on humor translation and their impact on the humorous effect in a film. To investigate this issue selected scenes of the British sitcom 'Fawlty Towers' will be analyzed with its Polish subtitles. The thesis is a cross-linguistic, multimodal study that can be considered as the next step in the evolution of subtitles and is aimed at all of those who want to delve into the world of audiovisual translation

Subtitling Humor - The Analysis of Selected Translation Techniques in Subtitling Elements Containing Humor available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1, Wroclaw University of Technology (Institute of English Studies), language: English, abstract: With the development and growing popularity of new technologies, audiovisual translation is becoming of paramount importance in recent translation studies. One of the most intricate forms of translation is subtitling because of its semiotic composition and limitations. In addition, different kinds of movies can be found in the media, for example comedies, that also involve particularly intricate aspects. One of them is humor, which requires extra attention. This multifarious phenomenon entails handling language- and culture-specific elements. While watching a subtitled foreign comedy, we do not realize what a complex process the translator has carried out. This paper will study the idea of how humor is best rendered in subtitles and evaluate selected techniques used in translating humorous excerpts of movies. The theoretical part of this paper comprised of two chapters will thoroughly study audiovisual translation, especially subtitling, Relevance Theory and humor with special focus on its translation. The practical part, which is the third chapter, will deal with translation techniques that I have selected from recent studies and, which is new in the field of translation study, will asses their application specifically in subtitling humor. To clarify, the chapter will exemplify and discuss the techniques a translator can use when translating humor. Crucial as the techniques are, I will look into their use within particular contexts. Their application will be illustrated by authentic excerpts taken from the recently produced box-office comedies Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Love Actually and Scary Movie 3. Using Relevance Theory as a reference point, the final intended effect of humor will be the focus of this study. In other words, I will attempt to scrutini

Translation and Multimodality: Beyond Words is one of the first books to explore how translation needs to be redefined and reconfigured in contexts where multiple modes of communication, such as writing, images, gesture, and music, occur simultaneously. Bringing together world-leading experts in translation theory and multimodality, each chapter explores important interconnections among these related, yet distinct, disciplines. As communication becomes ever more multimodal, the need to consider translation in multimodal contexts is increasingly vital. The various forms of meaning-making that have become prominent in the twenty-first century are already destabilising certain time-honoured translation-theoretic paradigms, causing old definitions and assumptions to appear inadequate. This ground-breaking volume explores these important issues in relation to multimodal translation with examples from literature, dance, music, TV, film, and the visual arts. Encouraging a greater convergence between these two significant disciplines, this text is essential for advanced students and researchers in Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Communication Studies.
