In 1938, inventor Buckminster Fuller observed that the Earth's population, standing upon each other's shoulders, would form nine complete chains to the Moon. Fuller's striking metaphor illustrates his proposal that imaginative uses of limited resources can result in extraordinary achievements. Hailed by Newsweek as "a guide book and a dream book of the future," this volume offers innovative solutions for improving the quality of life through progressive design. Inventor and visionary designer Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) dedicated his life to solving problems related to housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty. His best-known invention, the geodesic dome, has been produced more than 300,000 times around the world. Fuller's innovative design philosophy, with its focus on creating technology that "does more with less," continues to inspire designers, architects, scientists, and artists seeking to develop a more sustainable planet.

New edition of Buckminster Fuller’s first work published in 1938, which was promoted by Albert Einstein. In 43 chapters the constructor, visionary, inventor, designer, creator of language, and spectacular performer rolls out the art of independent thought. Fuller lays out an enormous horizon and Nine Chains to the Moon is equivalent to a navigation across the world we live in: "What Is a House?", "Death and Life", "Longing Crosses the Sea", "Dollarability", "We Call it Earth", "Stomach Rhythms", "Ephemeralization"—from the microscopic to the automobile, to the house, to urbanity, to the image of the cosmos in constant movement. The title, said Fuller, is meant to stimulate open thinking: the 1938 world population, one person on the shoulders of another, will reach from the earth to the moon nine times!

The title derives from a statistical cartoon: “If … all of the people of the world were to stand upon one another’s shoulders, they would make nine complete chains between the earth and the moon. If it is not so far to the moon, then it is not so far to the limits—whatever, whenever or wherever they may be.” This is Fuller’s first book and one of the few he wrote as a book and not as a composite of articles, transcripts, or letters. Many of his original and lifelong metaphors and strategies were introduced in this volume. A projected final chapter, “From Bibble to Bible to Babble,” was rejected by the publishers because its concrete poetry format was deemed too radical for inclusion in a trade book. The end papers anticipate the Dymaxion airocean world map. There are five appendices documenting Fuller’s virtuosity in large patterns: (1) on the chronology of scientific events from the ancient world to 1936; (2) coincidence of U.S. population centers with isotherm of 32° F; (3) U.S. to become world’s greatest exporter; (4) world copper production and consumption; and (5) growth of U.S. industry correlated with inventions.
