A theoretical and experimental study of the optical properties of small band gap semiconductors subject to laser excitation and the nonlinear infrared properties of small band gap semiconductors subject to laser excitation and the nonlinear infrared properties of semiconductors has been carried out. These studies have led to an understanding of the nonradiative recombination mechanisms due to impurities via an Auger process. Predictions about the role of radiative and nonradiative processes in narrow band gap semiconductors have been made. Experiments performed on HgCdTe alloys with different composition provided the first systematic study of photoluminescence in these alloys and gave data that supported the conclusions on the relative importance of radiative and nonradiative processes in alloys. The study of the nonlinear infrared properties in the semiconductors resulted in the first complete theory of the phenomenon. Experiments to measure the role of impurities on the saturation intensity have given results in good agreement with theory. (Author).

This volume contains the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Optical Properties of Narrow-Gap Low-Dimensional Structures", held from July 29th to August 1st, 1986, in St. Andrews, Scotland, under the auspices of the NATO International Scientific Exchange Program. The workshop was not limited to optical properties of narrow-gap semiconductor structures (Part III). Sessions on, for example, the growth methods and characterization of III-V, II-VI, and IV-VI materials, discussed in Part II, were an integral part of the workshop. Considering the small masses of the carriers in narrow-gap low dimensional structures (LOS), in Part I the enhanced band mixing and magnetic field effects are explored in the context of the envelope function approximation. Optical nonlinearities and energy relaxation phenomena applied to the well-known systems of HgCdTe and GaAs/GaAIAs, respectively, are reviewed with comments on their extension to narrow gap LOS. The relevance of optical observations in quantum transport studies is illustrated in Part IV. A review of devices based on epitaxial narrow-gap materials defines a frame of reference for future ones based on two-dimensional narrow-gap semiconductors; in addition, an analysis of the physics of quantum well lasers provides a guide to relevant parameters for narrow-gap laser devices for the infrared (Part V). The roles and potentials of special techniques are explored in Part VI, with emphasis on hydrostatic pressure techniques, since this has a pronounced effect in small-mass, narrow-gap, non-parabolic structures.

Many nonlinear optical effects have been discovered and various nonlinear optical devices constructed from a wide variety of materials. In particular, small band gap semiconductors like InSb can have unique optical properties because of their small effective masses and direct band gaps. Unusual and often unexpected results are found in their nonlinear behavior--optical bistability, nonlinear refraction, laser pulse limiting and shaping effects, optical transistor action, etc. These effects can be described in terms of a third order susceptibility and are associated with the creation of free carriers by the light. The creation of even a small number of free electrons or holes can strongly effect the 'dynamic' nonlinear optical properties of the material. In this project we used sensitive photoelectronic methods to investigate the nonlinear generation of electrons in InSb, CdS, and GaAs induced by two-photon absorption of light. A wide variety of photoelectronic effects are initiated by the creation of free carriers from the absorption of light in a semiconductor or insulator. These include the photo-Hall effect, photoconductivity, recombination, trapping, lifetimes, all of which are important for understanding devices such as light detectors, light emitters, or energy converters.
