This revised edition of Grospierre’s celebrated tour of modernist architecture has been expanded beyond Europe and North America to a truly global reach, featuring buildings in Southeast Asia, Australia, Africa and South America. Featuring new and revised texts from Barbican, MoMA and independent curators, this book offers intriguing insights into the history of modernist design, the origins of architectural photography and the reasons why architectural forms repeat in otherwise dissimilar countries. Is form still function? How “modern” is modernist architecture? And what has happened to the style’s foundational utopian ideals? Nicolas Grospierre’s masterful photographic survey catalogues both famous and little-known buildings, challenging the viewer to consider modernist architecture’s complicated legacy. Drawn from Grospierre’s ever-expanding archive documenting his travels, these large-format photographs of almost 250 buildings are arranged purely by their shapes, prioritizing form over function and location to give a unique perspective of global structures. Uniform in perspective, and presented without comment, Grospierre’s photographs allow viewers to discover details and colors that a more narrative-focused presentation would prohibit. The work of nearly a quarter of a century, this ever-expanding collection reflects a labor of love, a photographer’s deep obsession, and a celebration of buildings both iconic and mundane all over the world.

Millions of people love the game of chess, but most of them dont know how the game developed. Henry J. Greenberg, one of the worlds leading chess historians, reveals how chess has its origins in a game called Chaturanga, which was designed during the reign of the Gupta Dynasty to commemorate Chandragupta IIs victory over the Sakas and to ensure the continuation of peace. In this comprehensive history of the game, youll learn how: seeds for the origin of chess were planted during the flourishing of the Harappan civilization from 2,300 to 1900 B.C.; Chaturanga was specifically designed for the civilian population; rules were made so simple that even children could learn how to play; elephants play a critical role regarding when and why chess developed; Greenberg also explains how chess historians can be classified into four types: Archaeologists, Linguists, Sinologists, and Oxfordites. Learn the characteristics of each, what they disagree on, and whether their views about the origins of chess hold any validity. From the very beginnings of the game to Leonardo da Vincis invention of modern moves while living in Milan, Italy, youll be delighted with this comprehensive history of chess.

Georg Lukács’s Philosophy of Praxis available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Georg Lukács' early Marxist philosophy of the 1920s laid the foundations of Critical Theory. However the evaluation of Lukács' philosophical contribution has been largely determined by one-sided readings of eminent theorists like Adorno, Habermas, Honneth or even Lukács himself. This book offers a new reconstruction of Lukács' early Marxist work, capable of restoring its dialectical complexity by highlighting its roots in his neo-Kantian, 'pre-Marxist' period. In his pre-Marxist work Lukács sought to articulate a critique of formalism from the standpoint of a dubious mystical ethics of revolutionary praxis. Consequently, Lukács discovered a more coherent and realistic answer to his philosophical dilemmas in Marxism. At the same time, he retained his neo-Kantian reservations about idealist dialectics. In his reading of historical materialism he combined non-idealist, non-systematic historical dialectics with an emphasis on conscious, collective, transformative praxis. Reformulated in this way Lukács' classical argument plays a central role within a radical Critical Theory.
