"Sarah Hirschman's book is ... really a manifesto for an approach to education that does all these more human, more important things." -Danielle Allen, Professor, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey "I'd love to see People and Stories programs for the parents of children in every at-risk school district in the country." -Robert Hass, US Poet Laureate, 1995-1997 People and Stories / Gente y Cuentos describes how men and women on welfare or in rehabilitation centers, prisoners, rural workers, disadvantaged youth, or just ordinary community members are offered the chance to experience literature in a way they have not been able to in the past. Founded by Sarah Hirschman, People and Stories / Gente y Cuentos encompasses groups of common, often under-served adults in the United States, France, and Colombia who enjoy reading and discussing works of literature. Upon attending a seminar with the philosopher, Paulo Freire, and working with groups in New York's Lower East Side and Dorchester, Massachusetts, she created Gente y Cuentos in Spanish. Some years later, the English-language People and Stories program was added. Currently, Gens et Recits in French is being developed in Paris and in the southwest of France. This book describes the various influences that led to the development of this method. The clarity of the explanations and the attention to detail should help those who want to organize similar discussion groups in their own communities."

This book was released on 2020-09-20. Cuentos Para Gente Con Prisa / When Crumbs Fall and Other Stories for People in a Rush available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. We are publishing this special bilingual edition after receiving many petitions from readers who like the original Spanish edition but also enjoyed reading the English translation. WHEN CRUMBS FALL AND OTHER STORIES FOR PEOPLE IN A RUSH is the English edition for CUENTOS PARA GENTE CON PRISA. I am sharing, with anyone who wants to be a reader and at the same time author, this book of eleven stories to understand together the complexity of the human environment from an individual or a collective perspective. The similarity of human behavior is portrayed in the writing of these stories that have occurred, occur, and may occur in Bogotá, San Juan de Puerto Rico, Washington, DC or any other place in the world. The basic rules of life have been modified in modern cities and the acts that we had once taken for granted as the simplest of our human reality have become so complicated that it is necessary to hire experts to help us. This is how today we have those looking for us the ideal sentimental partner, advise us on the use of our clothes or indicate the correct way to smile. The stories featured in WHEN CRUMBS FALL AND OTHER STORIES FOR PEOPLE IN A RUSH get to the point and generate reflections based on the reader's background. In this attempt, the author pretends that the simple act of reading a book does not become an impossible event where another expert would be needed.

This book was released on 2018-05-02. Public Pages available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Public reading programs are flourishing in many Latin American cities in the new millennium. They defy the conception of reading as solitary and private by literally taking literature to the streets to create new communities of readers. From institutional and official to informal and spontaneous, the reading programs all use public space, distribute creative writing to a mass public, foster collective rather than individual reading, and provide access to literature in unconventional arenas. The first international study of contemporary print culture in the Americas, Public Pages reveals how recent cultural policy and collective literary reading intervene in public space to promote social integration in cities in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Chile. Marcy Schwartz looks at broad institutional programs such as UNESCO World Book Capital campaigns and the distribution of free books on public transportation, as well as local initiatives that produce handmade books out of recycled materials (known as cartoneras) and display banned books at former military detention centers. She maps the connection between literary reading and the development of cultural citizenship in Latin America, with municipalities, cultural centers, and groups of ordinary citizens harnessing reading as an activity both social and literary. Along with other strategies for reclaiming democracy after decades of authoritarian regimes and political violence, as well as responding to neoliberal economic policies, these acts of reading collectively in public settings invite civic participation and affirm local belonging.
