Fossil fuels allow us to use solar energy captured by ancient biological materials, which did not necessarily evolve to maximize the energy harvesting efficiency. As we continue to deprive the natural resources, they will be increasingly too costly to recover and too valuable to burn, not to mention present and future environmental externalities. The optimal method to harvest the abundant solar energy consists of using solar cells, which absorb sunlight in semiconductors and convert the photon energy to more easily usable forms.
