This document describes the content and format of the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) measurements for reading comprehension of students in grades 4, 8, and 12. According to the framework, NAEP assesses three contexts for reading: reading for literary experience, reading for information, and reading to perform a task). In addition to reading within different contexts, NAEP reading comprehension questions are developed to engage the different approaches that readers may take in the process of trying to understand what is being read: (1) Forming a general understanding of the text as a whole; (2) Developing interpretation by focusing on specific parts and linking information across parts of the test; (3) Making reader/text connections by thinking beyond the text and applying the text to real-world situations; and (4) Examining content and structure to consider why and how the text was developed.
