Geospatial Technologies for Land Degradation Assessment and Management available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The constant growth of the world’s population and the decline of the availability of land and soil resources are global concerns for food security. Other concerns are the decrease in productivity and delivery of essential ecosystems services because of the decline of soil quality and health by a range of degradation processes. Key soil properties like soil bulk density, organic carbon concentration, plant available water capacity, infiltration rate, air porosity at field moisture capacity, and nutrient reserves, are crucial properties for soil functionality which refers to the capacity of soil to perform numerous functions. These functions are difficult to measure directly and are estimated through indices of soil quality and soil health. Soil degradation, its extent and severity, can also be estimated by assessing indices of soil quality and health. "Geospatial Technology for Land Degradation Assessment and Management" uses satellite imagery and remote sensing technologies to measure landscape parameters and terrain attributes. Remote sensing and geospatial technologies are important tools in assessing the extent and the severity of land and soil degradation, their temporal changes, and geospatial distribution in a timely and cost-effective manner. The knowledge presented in the book by Dr. R.S. Dwivedi shows how remote sensing data can be utilized for inventorying, assessing, and monitoring affected ecosystems and how this information can be integrated in the models of different local settings. Through many land degradations studies, land managers, researchers, and policymakers will find practical applications of geospatial technologies and future challenges. The information presented is also relevant to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations towards global food security.

Download and read online ebook Advances in Remote Sensing and GIS Analysis write by Peter M. Atkinson. This book was released on 1999-09-09. Advances in Remote Sensing and GIS Analysis available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. An authoritative and state-of-the-art book bringing together some of the most recent developments in remote sensing and GIS analysis with a particular emphasis on mathematical techniques and their applications. With contributions from academia, industry and research institutes, all with a high standing, this book covers a range of techniques including: fuzzy classification, artificial neural networks, geostatistical techniques (such as kriging, cokriging, stochastic simulation and regularization, texture classification, fractals, per-parcel classification, raster and vector data integration and process modelling. The range of applications includes land cover and land use mapping, cloud tracking, snow cover mapping and air temperature monitoring, topographic mapping, geological classification and soil erosion modelling. This book will be valuable to both researchers and advanced students of remote sensing and GIS. It contains several new approaches, recent developments, and novel applications of existing techniques. Most chapters report the results of experiment and investigation. Some chapters form broad reviews of recent developments in the field. In all cases, the mathematical basis is fully explained.

Developments in Soil Classification, Land Use Planning and Policy Implications available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. As the world’s population continues to expand, maintaining and indeed increasing agricultural productivity is more important than ever, though it is also more difficult than ever in the face of changing weather patterns that in some cases are leading to aridity and desertification. The absence of scientific soil inventories, especially in arid areas, leads to mistaken decisions about soil use that, in the end, reduce a region’s capacity to feed its population, or to guarantee a clean water supply. Greater efficiency in soil use is possible when these resources are properly classified using international standards. Focusing on arid regions, this volume details soil classification from many countries. It is only once this information is properly assimilated by policymakers it becomes a foundation for informed decisions in land use planning for rational and sustainable uses.
