Robert J Walker, Imperialist (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from Robert J Walker, Imperialist Polk, author of the best tariff law known to our statute books, and the greatest imperialist who ever violated the most solemn of all American declarations. Such a post-mortem might suggest a very tame and prosaic biography. Not so in the case of Walker, whose life was as crowded with event and vicissitude as ever the tale of a novelist. Yet neither story-teller nor sober historian ever stumbled upon the subject, and the records themselves have all but perished. Born of good parentage in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, on July 23, 1801, he grew up in the midst of the democratic up-country which saw in Thomas Jefferson the ideal of American life. Young Walker was sent at an early age to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in July, 1819, at the head of his class. He next appears as a surveyor for a land company in the northwest corner of the state, but in this raw region his principal interest was the study of law, for in three years he was ready to begin the practice of that profession; and he located in Pittsburgh in 1822. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas agreed on one thing: Illinois needed railroads. Over the next fifty years, the state became the nation's railroad hub, with Chicago at its center. Speculators, greed, growth, and regulation followed as the railroad industry consumed unprecedented amounts of capital and labor. A nationwide market resulted, and the Windy City became the site of opportunities and challenges that remain to this day. In this first-of-its-kind history, full of entertaining anecdotes and colorful characters, Simon Cordery describes the explosive growth of Illinois railroads and its impact on America. Cordery shows how railroading in Illinois influenced railroad financing, the creation of a national economy, and government regulation of business. Cordery's masterful chronicle of rail development in Illinois from 1837 to 2010 reveals how the state's expanding railroads became the foundation of the nation's rail network.
