Shakespeare, 'Othello' and Domestic Tragedy available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Often set in domestic environments and built around protagonists of more modest status than traditional tragic subjects, 'domestic tragedy' was a genre that flourished on the Renaissance stage from 1580-1620. Shakespeare, 'Othello', and Domestic Tragedy is the first book to examine Shakespeare's relationship to the genre by way of the King's and Chamberlain's Men's ownership and production of many of the domestic tragedies, and of the genre's extensive influence on Shakespeare's own tragedy, Othello. Drawing in part upon recent scholarship that identifies Shakespeare as a co-author of Arden of Faversham, Sean Benson demonstrates the extensive-even uncanny-ties between Othello and the domestic tragedies. Benson argues that just as Hamlet employs and adapts the conventions of revenge tragedy, so Othello can only be fully understood in terms of its exploitation of the tropes and conventions of domestic tragedy. This book explores not only the contexts and workings of this popular sub-genre of Renaissance drama but also Othello's secure place within it as the quintessential example of the form.

The Tragedie of Othello, the Moore of Venice available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Tragedie of Othello, The Moore of Venice William Shakespeare One of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, Othello sets itself apart with its personal scale, fascinating plot and compelling, exotic characters. It shows the two sides of passion with shocking clarity. At first great love overcomes the great differences in social status, age, and race between Othello and Desdemona and their mutual devotion seems invulnerable. But the waves of passion are turned to obsessive jealousy at the hand of Iago, the perfect villain, who has set out to destroy Othello on a personal mission of revenge. With a faultlessly executed plan, Iago sews the seeds of doubt and mistrust that pervert Othello's once noble mind and ensnares those closest to him into a miserable web of deceit and doom. This powerful drama, with its gripping dialogue and unequalled poetry, is not to be missed. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. The Tragedy of Othello, Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio, a disciple of Boccaccio, first published in 1565. The play is a concentrated, tightly-constructed domestic tragedy with almost no subplot relief, revolving around five or six central characters. Othello's ill-placed trust in the villain Iago, resulting in his growing suspicion in his wife Desdemona's infidelity with his lieutenant Cassio, led to the ultimate tragedy. Othello is commonly considered one of Shakespeare's great tragedies, and one of his finest works.

In the board game 'Othello', players must turn double-sided counters to their advantage. This doubleness is shared by Shakespeare's play of 1604, marked from its outset by a dual and paradoxical title 'Othello, or the Moor of Venice'. This study teases out instances of doubleness, duplication and paradox to discuss the play's language and its themes. Chapters cover the issues of substitution, of racial polarity and its confusions, of the contested place of the domestic in the play, and the mixed generic signals this comedy-turned-tragedy gives out to its audiences. Throughout the emphasis is on the close readings of the play on the page and on stage, informed by the recent scholarship that has made Othello so pressing a play for the vexed cultural politics of the twenty-first century.
