Sustainable Mobility in a Fast-Changing World available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Our world is changing fast. Countries’ transport systems, which have long been shaped by project-by-project considerations, must help achieve higher-level goals for the well-being of mankind, as embodied by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. New forces impose greater effectiveness in the way public choices are made, such as making better use of data and technologies, adopting a more inclusive and participatory approach to decision making, and addressing social concerns about equity. Transport practitioners and country decision-makers have been looking for structured and coherent guidance about ways to adjust to these new dynamics and change the trajectory of transport system. This book examines the rationale for and details an innovative approach for public decision-making to expedite the pace to sustainable mobility.

A call to redefine mobility so that it is connected, heterogeneous, intelligent, and personalized, as well as sustainable, adaptable, and city-friendly. The twentieth century was the century of the automobile; the twenty-first will see mobility dramatically re-envisioned. Automobiles altered cityscapes, boosted economies, and made personal mobility efficient and convenient for many. We had a century-long love affair with the car. But today, people are more attached to their smartphones than their cars. Cars are not always the quickest mode of travel in cities; and emissions from the rapidly growing number of cars threaten the planet. This book, by three experts from industry and academia, envisions a new world of mobility that is connected, heterogeneous, intelligent, and personalized (the CHIP architecture). The authors describe the changes that are coming. City administrators are shifting from designing cities for cars to designing cities for people. Nations and cities will increasingly employ targeted user fees and offer subsidies to nudge consumers toward more sustainable modes. The sharing economy is coaxing many consumers to shift from being owners of assets to being users of services. The auto industry is responding with connected cars that double as virtual travel assistants and by introducing autonomous driving. The CHIP architecture embodies an integrated, multimode mobility system that builds on ubiquitous connectivity, electrified and autonomous vehicles, and a marketplace open to innovation and entrepreneurship. Consumers will exercise choice on the basis of user experience and efficiency, aided by “intelligent advisors,” accessible through their mobile devices. An innovative mobility architecture reconfigured for this century is a social and economic necessity; this book charts a course for achieving it.

Global Roadmap of Action Toward Sustainable Mobility available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Private Sector Consultations paper recognizes that as transportation and related industries undergo fundamental changes-fiercer competition with new entrants, multiple exits of traditional actors, new business models, and rapid development of new technologies-change cannot happen without integrating inputs from both public and private actors. Onboarding the private sector in the SuM4All initiative was essential to convey the voice of the business and achieve a successful transformation of mobility. A business consultation, led by Michelin on behalf of the SuM4All Steering Committee, with support of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Movin'On and Ernst & Young (EY), took the pulse of more than 25 large corporations covering the whole value chain comprising raw materials, transportation services, equipment, digital services, manufacturing, financing services, energy, and consulting. In addition to this, at the annual world summit on sustainable mobility in June 2019, Movin'On organized a special workshop in Montreal. This workshop, dedicated to the Global Roadmap of Action, offered the SuM4All initiative a unique opportunity to get direct outreach to business, and allowed corporations present at Movin'On to add their voice, thus enriching the consultation process. This paper summarizes the outcomes of these engagements.
